Default Computer crashing - I can see the problem but not fix

So, my computer has been crashing at random times. I used to be once
or twice a week,
now several times a day. I found theevent log, and most of the red x
symbols have automatic windows update listed. So, I turned it off.
Doesn't seem to crash as often, but each time it does, I check the
settings, and it is back to automatic update every day at midnight.

I just reset it this afternoon, turned off the setting, and opened it
again to confirm that it was turned off. At 11:20pm,. it crashed
again. I rebooted, checked the log, and it says automatic windows
update. And the setting is turned on.

How do I turn it off permanently? How is it turning itself back on?

Either that, or how can I get it happy again with the automatic
updates so that it doesn't crash the system?
