Default MS Works 7 question

I'm running WinXP SP3 and am composing a family history digest. I
normally use Wordpad for average compositions, but thought I would use
Microsoft Works that came bundled with the PC. I never tried to use if
and found the learning curve relatively easy. I also realize that
Works is somewhat archaic in this day and age. My problem is the
sequential numbers that appear to the left of some lines of text. I
cannot find a way to remove them so I can print the document.
Can anyone help?

Those are numbering format.
In Wordpad, it's similar to the bullets formatting (except it uses dots
instead of numbers).
In Office Word, it's labeled as Bullets and Numbering.

Don't know about MS-Works, so...
Check the Format main menu for "bullets" or "numbering" menu items.
Or look for a toolbar button that looks similar to Wordpad's Bullets button
image (but shown as numbers instead of dots).

Highlight the numbered lines, then click the toolbar button to toggle the
formatting.

If you access it from the menu, it may show a formatting dialog to specify
the style of the bullets/numbering. Select "None" or no formatting.
