Free upgrade to Windows 8.1
Has Microsoft changed its policy in allowing people to upgrade from the DVD drive or do we still need to go through the Store method. In Windows 10, it is possible to upgrade from DVD drive but not sure if this also applies to Windows 8.1. I have just reset my machine as I normally do once every 30 months and now I need to upgrade it to 8.1 and I have downloaded the 8.1 full version from Microsoft website but haven't tried it to upgrade my machine yet. Would I need a serial number to do it? |

Does this look like it would help you? http://www.howtogeek.com/187525/how-...windows-8-key/ I did this and I now have a win8.1 ISO (DVD) fixed so I can load it and use my win8 key. I bought windows 8 for the $39.99 initial offer. |

Would I need a serial number to do it? While MSFT still recommends using the Store to update from 8.0 to 8.1 (the update file and time is smaller and shorter).....Msft does provide Windows 8.1 media freely available to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...-refresh-media When using the media - ensure you obtain the media from the above link - when prompted ensure you choose the correct edition (Home or Pro), language(e.g. English) and architecture (32 or 64 bit) - load 8.1, navigate to to setup.exe on the media, and rt. click and run as administrator - ensure you choose the upgrade option to retain files, settings and applications. The Windows 8.1 media does not require entry of a product key when upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1 when running setup.exe from within Win 8.0. The Windows 8.1 media will update 8.0 to 8.1 and also update 8.1 to 8.1 Update. (8.1 Update is a critical update that is required for future updates to Windows) -- ...winston msft mvp windows experience |

The OS would stop working right after 30 days. The purpose of these is to allow your installation process to finish. After it is finished, then you can install the "real" Win8 key and it should work at that point. Install-only keys for home users... Will not activate. No good for long term usage. I spoke to support about this and the only way to get win 10 is to upgrade via the app in the task bar or windows store or by downloading the iso to hard drive and starting the upgrade from that. If you download the ISO you will need some tool of some kind to install. I am sure you can find more info about that way on line. If you have win 10 installed in virtualbox go to support and ask them. And that should clear every thing up for you. |
