I'm not sure if WIA is relevant or not, but it wouldn't hurt to
disable it to see what effect that might have.
I'll try that. But this is entirely new behavior.
Also, have you ever used Process Explorer to determine which
sub-process is calling upon the System process?
No, nobody ever led me to that. And please note that SvcHost was
listed with System as having called it, not Compaq-Owner, so I
don't believe it was Norton-related.
There is some confusion here!

What is the name of the subprocess?

Well, that's a Norton process, my friend!

I am sure Norton latches onto SYSTEM as well. Either uninstall
Norton as earlier suggested or post to a Norton forum where others
who have experienced the same problem can guide you with regard to
changing a specific setting. Or contact their support.
You may recall that I worked with Norton last time around, and they
showed me how to make sure that Norton Anti-Virus *never* intrudes
or does a scan all by itself.

From what I can tell, it's intruding again. :-)

As for Norton latching onto SYSTEM,
I didn't think so, but you say you're *sure*......Let's see what
other ideas come out, before I tackle Norton.

I'm sure because of others' experiences. I'm sure you'll reach the
same conclusion if you Google the terms ccsvchst and cpu. First hit:

Some have reported success by uninstalling Norton, using the removal
tool you need to download from their website, and reinstalling the
latest version. Then again, if it were me, I wouldn't do that last
step. :-)

Default ccSvcHost using 100% CPU....

I spent 1/2 hour online with Norton Chat Support.
They took control of my desktop and opened
Norton Anti-Virus, and, sure enough, it was set
again to do "Idle Time Scan". I had them reset
everything as I prefer it...NO automatic scans
ever. I don't know how they got reset.....but I
really appreciate the level of support I get from
them.

If it reverts once more, do you now know how to disable it?

I think so, Daave......but if not, I can count
on their techies to do it again, and next time I'll
ask them to do it slowly so I can copy it
step-by-step. And I'll make another back-up clone

Default ccSvcHost using 100% CPU....

A new version was auto-installed recently. It probably reset default
settings.

You should always deal with issues regarding Norton in the Norton forums,
not in some MS group like this.

You credit them but I believe it is YOU that kept your system virus free by
not clicking on unknown items.
I do not (and won't) use Norton and have never had a virus. The only
protection I use is WSE and I installed it
fairly recently.

Why are you giving credit to Norton?

Well, I do because they have been, going back into Windows 3.1
days, been the only anti-virus software I've used, and I'm
sure that others can do it well also. But I credit their installed
software as being 100% effective at keeping me virus-free.

Norton has been a whipping-boy for years, and for
years they *earned* it. But I have never had a virus or worm
or anything else that invaded me, and I credit Norton with that.
And their on-line chat tech service is superb.

Th glitch I'm complaining about was shown on Task Manager
as having SYSTEM as its host, and all Norton programs
show Compaq-Owner as host. This one even denied me permission
to end it.

When I brought the system out of hibernation this morning,

than go have a cup of coffee and come back? Event viewer/log
showed no clue other than "WIA entering running state"......
And please note that SvcHost was
listed with System as having called it, not Compaq-Owner, so I don't
believe
it was Norton-related.
Is this behavior brand new? If so, what have you done recently that
might have caused it? (Examples are the installation of new programs,
updates, or devices. Obviously, malware needs to be ruled out.)
Brand new, and nothing recently installed.
Finally, other than when coming out of hibernation, does your PC ever
exhibit this particular symtpom (System using 100% of CPU) any other
time? Once the 15 minutes pass, does your PC perform well?
No, it's new, and I had no choice but to wait until whatever
it was doing, it was finished doing it.
Oops! I just noticed your Subject Line! In the future, this
information should also be in the body of your post! That process
belongs to Norton, which is a well-known resource hog. Have you
considered uninstalling Norton and switching to a superior program
that uses fewer resources and causes fewer conflicts? I personally
recommend Avira Antivir.
Why do you think that process 'belongs to Norton'. when the *system*
was
listed as having invoked it? And yes, I know how hoggish Norton can
be,
but on those occasions when it is, I can identify it as having been
called in Task Manager. And over the years, I've lived through all of
Symantec's intrusive workings, and have stayed with them while they
grew
until now they are so helpful whenever I call them, that I wouldn't
even
consider switching.

I was not aware that a new version of anything was auto-installed.
I do not consciously allow auto-install of anything from
anywhere.

You should always deal with issues regarding Norton in the Norton forums,
not in some MS group like this.

I agree with that philosophy. Note in the thread that Daave
corrected my assumption that, because Task Manager said 'System'
Norton was not responsible. I refer system problems to this XP
group. I have no qualms about beating on Norton to solve
problems that I suspect are Norton-related.
