3-button mouse (antique)
Task = how to instal an ancient (Logitech MS-35) 3-button serial mouse
under WinXP (SP3.) Logitech documentation says no drivers are needed for serial mice, only for USB mice. Trouble is that the Windows menus do not recognize 3-button mice (only 2-buttons, with or without wheel.) I prefer the 1990s-era Trackman Marble (also now off the market and replaced by less-ergonomic types) which had the same 3-button configuration. But currently the middle button is unused/unconfigured. How can I set it up as formerly? -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

You should be able to do what you want in control panelmouse.

I have a very old 3 button mouse of theirs that is not supported under XP. In fact, it even required a registry change before it would be seen under 98SE. So much for it's lifetime warranty when it becomes obsolete before it dies Usually you need the specific mouse driver software installed before you can use the middle button. Windows without it (default mouse driver) doesn't seem to recognize it. The Middle Mouse Button software mentioned in another thread to this topic does work though. I use it for a conflict on my laptop with an external mouse and it does what I want. |

Fortunately the slush pile included Logitech Mouseware 9.79.1 which seems customized for 3-button mice (unlike Mouseware v.8, unlike recent software.) Installation now is normal. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |
