Default Windows Defender too slow to update

Good evening. I was trying to download the windows defender spyware
definitions but it went too slow. Did cancel, perhaps I will try another
day. Do you think Windows Defender is good enough for windows 8 or is it
better to install Microsoft Security Essentials?

Thanks.

They are the same thing and they are a baseline AV.

You would be better off using a 3rd party free AV program.

Here is a list for you. A lot of people use Avast!

I have installed Panda on some friends and family computers that don't
want to have to fool with any settings.

Thanks, I use Mcafee a lot. It doesn't slow down the system very much.

Nothing wrong with McAfee or Norton especially if you can get them for
free through your ISP(s) like I can.

Now wait for the hundreds of comments bashing both products.

I know it's not fair to hold a grudge after 20 years but I used Norton
Security Suite something like 20 years ago and it made my system
crawl, loaded up all sorts of needless and useless utilities and was a
nightmare to get rid of (the system ran SO much better without it and
crashed a lot less). So I still will not use any Norton Product.

Correction: I wanted to say I used to use Mcafee a lot. One time I bought
the software on store before Microsoft had Security Essentials. But then I
found it was only valid for a year, then you had to pay more. So I gave up.
I think it was one of the first softwares for rent I saw. In the past you
could buy this AV software and update for free.

There are alternatives. On this machine I'm using Lavasoft Ad-Aware
but that's crashing one other machine I have so I moved to Avast.
But I've no real idea which is best.

Sure there are alternatives, but Avira is one of the top free AVs that
you can use. Has been for years.

Lavasoft Ad-Aware? I haven't used that in about 10 years. And that is
not an AV program. It is to be used in addition to your AV program.
Malwarebytes and Superantispware are better programs though.

I like Wikipedia, for some background info.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad-Aware

"In the 2008 Edition, Lavasoft bundled Ad-Aware Pro and Plus
for the first time with an antivirus scanner,

which used the Avira engine ---

and this arrangement continued for a few years.

Starting with Ad-Aware version 10,
the Bitdefender antivirus engine was used instead." ---

Note that this is a popular option in the industry.
Several of the companies, sell their engine to third
parties. And that's how an Adware program can acquire
basic AV capabilities.

Such an AV capability might be signature based. You
wouldn't expect industry-leading heuristic detection.
But, signature analysis is better than no protection
at all.

So before using a product like that, you would check
the recent AV-Comparatives for Bitdefender, and see
what percentage of stuff Bitdefender detects. And make
your decision that way.
