See this article and scroll down to see your version: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/search/default.aspx?alpha=Windows%208 The dates are in MMDDYYYY format so watch out. Good luck. |

But there are LOTS of differences, most of which will cause me not to "upgrade". Don't ask which ones. There are plenty of posts here and in the windows-10 newsgroup. |

Support Life For Windows 8.x?
Cy Burnot wrote on 08/10/2015 5:24 PM:
Has MS said how long they will continue to provide support for Win 8.x? If so, when does support end? Thx. 8.0 - Jan 2016 8.1 - Jan 2023 Support is two phases - mainstream and extended. Ending mainstream support for a product means Microsoft will no longer be enhancing that product. What it does NOT mean is there will no longer be fixes for security and reliability issues. Microsoft will continue to issue bug fixes and patches for security and reliability issues. After mainstream support ends: - MSFT no longer supplies non-security hotfixes unless you have an extended support agreement - warranty claims are not accepted - MSFT stops receiving requests for new features and design changes At the point in time that extended support ends - the o/s stops receiving any security patches or reliability patches. Consumer's don't purchase extended support. Enterprise and Software Assurance Customers as an example (for XP the most recent o/s to end extended support) can purchase extended support - $200 per XP device(first year); $500 per device second year. -- ...winston msft mvp windows experience |

I certainly would not buy a car or a toaster or a TV if it's lifetime was going to be only five years. What am I missing? -- Pete Cresswell |

Windows 8.1 was released on Aug 12, 2014. From then to January 10, 2023 is eight years and five months. You may not think that's a long time, but it's considerably longer than five years. And Windows 8.0 was released on October 25, 2012. Since 8.0 is essentially just an update--what used to be called a Service Pack--to 8.0, that makes its life span over 12 years. Moreover, no version of Windows suddenly dies when support ends. Although it may not be wise to continue using it, you can do so, and many people do. I may be unusual, but I can't imagine *wanting* to use a 12 year old version of Windows. I certainly would not buy a car or a toaster or a TV if it's lifetime was going to be only five years. What am I missing? Unlike Windows, cars and toasters die, and can no longer be used when their lifetime ends. |

Per (PeteCresswell):

Now its starting to dawn on me: five years is pretty long in the context of PC ownership... I was thinking more in terms of purchasing an OS and using it on successive PCs. -- Pete Cresswell |
