Check System Requirements before upgrading to Windows 10

Windows 10 Upgrade
Just gone to upgrade windows 8.1 running on parallels on my MacBook air
2014, Thought I better have a look and see what its like and so I got
the media creation tool to upgrade when i wanted not when Microsoft
deemed it was time for me, took ages to download then and only then did
it check to see if my setup met the System requirements Oops Microsoft
muppets you are supposed to check before not after when someone as sat
waiting an hour, ok i needed more ram, so i shutdown the win 8.1 in
parallels and reconfigure to give it the 4gb of ram it wanted, then re
start it up and re run the media creation tool, Oops it didn't save the
download and now Im sat bored waiting another hour, Sort yourself out
Microsoft, some people are daft enough to still be reliant on your
software.

You could have done this check yourself, before trying your upgrade.

On the 'Get windows 10' window, click on the 3 horizontal bars (top left
hand). Another window will pop up, with a menu.
Under 'Getting the Upgrade' click on 'Check your PC'. If all's well,
you get a 'You're good to go!' message, with a green tick against the
criteria.

One thing missing from the Windows 10 era, is the Upgrade Advisor.
Previous OSes, had a separate Upgrade Advisor you could download,
and it would check that the pre-conditions existed for the
software. It would check the six processor features, whether
your machine supports NX, and so on.

If you have Windows 8.1 and regularly take updates via Windows Update,
then you would have received the GWX (Get Windows Ten) subsystem. it
consists of telemetry upgrade and a separate package with GWX.ese and
GWXUI.exe. The GWX is supposed to fulfill the role of Upgrade
Advisor, but it obviously isn't a big win on the UI front. I think
the discrete, separately downloadable design, makes more sense.
The user asks the question "can I", and the Upgrade Advisor
provides a single point of reference with the answer. Nothing
could be simpler in terms of user expectations.

You don't have to get Win10 media via GWX. When GWX does it,
you get Win10 media, but you also get pre-staged drivers.
If the driver is missing or buggy, GWX puts your upgrade
status in a holding pattern until the issue is resolved
at the source end (new driver available).

If you download separate media, the driver issue could arise
during installation, which is much later in the process, but
the process should still be able to "roll back".

So if you want media separately, and don't want to deal with the
arbitrary nature of GWX, you go here.

Now, there's an interesting observation about that page.
If you visit using a Windows 7 or Windows 8 computer (i.e.
a "modern" computer), then you are given the MediaCreationTool.exe
program. You run that on your computer, to download media.
Temporary files are staged in C:\$WINDOWS.~WS if you do that.

If, on the other hand, you visit that particular web page
from Linux or Mac or WinXP, the MediaCreationTool.exe would
not run, and so instead, they give you an ISO9660 directly,
with no fuss.

There is only one problem with that last paragraph. I tried
that method (downloaded from WinXP to avoid MediaCreationTool),
and two downloads (x86, x64) I tried were too small and were
corrupted. I eventually got full-sized DVDs. This is to give
you some idea of the relative sizes to expect. There's no way
to know exactly how many different SKUs that Microsoft might be
serving up (different ISO versions).

Win10_English_x64.iso 4,083,853,312 bytes (US English?)

Burn a DVD with that, so you'll have the media later for
things like SFC (system file checker) runs. Just in case.
The DVD also serves as a way to boot to recovery console.

For your first install of Windows 10, you should be
booted into Windows 8.1, and have at least 20GB of
space for the new files. You run the setup.exe off
the DVD to kick off the Upgrade Install.

And before you do that, you should have a backup of
the Win 8.1 machine. While the OS installer has rollback
capability, the experience with the "Go Back" feature
offered for returning to the qualifying OS, doesn't
work that well. It's better to rely on a backup image
as a way to get back to Win 8.1 with all your applications
intact. There have been quite a few sad stories so far,
and having a backup would have provided a cleaner
way to escape the mess.

That advisor is a POS. It told me my Win 8.1 machine was "good to go" a
month ago. Even said all of my software was good to go. Now it tells me
that the Bluetooth won't work on Win10.

On my Win7 machine it says "good to go", but it doesn't say a word about
Office 2000 that I have installed on that machine not working on Win10.

- in fact, if you ever need support on Win10 from MSFT, it is likely
that a request to uninstall any Office prior to 2007 will be suggested
to ensure Win10 does not have any compatibility issues that may
interfere or mask another problem.

My Win8 machine came with Office Starter 2010. Are you saying it won't
work on Windows 10?


That was MSFT's recommendation and position regarding Win10 software
compatibility. It's up to you (at your own risk) to test whether or not
those waters are safe.

That suggestion would not surprise me. I have to admit though, that the only
times I've ever had to call Microsoft Support was on XP and Me when I had
done enough hardware upgrades to warrant a new activation. And that was
simple and painless :-)

On the 'Get windows 10' window, click on the 3 horizontal bars (top
left
hand). Another window will pop up, with a menu.
Under 'Getting the Upgrade' click on 'Check your PC'. If all's well,
you get a 'You're good to go!' message, with a green tick against the
criteria.

That advisor is a POS. It told me my Win 8.1 machine was "good to go" a
month ago. Even said all of my software was good to go. Now it tells me
that the Bluetooth won't work on Win10.

On my Win7 machine it says "good to go", but it doesn't say a word
about
Office 2000 that I have installed on that machine not working on Win10.

The GWX app compatibility guide engine is updated periodically as new
telmetry is collected, triaged, analyzed, etc.

- Except for Office Starter 2010

Office 2013 Support ends 11-Apr-2023 Compatible


My Win8 machine came with Office Starter 2010. Are you saying it won't
work on Windows 10?


That was MSFT's recommendation and position regarding Win10 software
compatibility. It's up to you (at your own risk) to test whether or not
those waters are safe.




Don't know if you will see this since it's an old thread, but Office
Starter 2010 works on Windows 10.
