Same here. X3 had some issues, I skipped X5. I've had no problems with X3, X4, X5, X6, or X7. My only complaint is that there are very few differences between the versions, and there's been very little reason to upgrade. |

I suspected something like this, but I wasn't sure what. I ran 2.0 very slightly, but it ran under DOS. So WordPerfect didn't run under 2.x, it ran next to it. So why would it have made WordPerfect buggy? If it did, I don't remember it. Then there was the 3.x series, which also broke miscellaneous software. I ran all of those, but don't remember it breaking anything. I skipped 95/95/ME, You mean 95/*98*/Me, I assume. As did I. used OS/2, which ran Win 3.1 just fine, better than I never ran OS/2 DOS, in fact. That was on the first machine I built, er, I mean assembled. But IBM dropped OS/2, so I used W2000 on the next machine, and dabbled in Linux. Bought a Mac Powerbook around that time, too, but that was a mistake. I ran Windows 2000, but never ran Linux or Macintosh anything. Breaking software seems to be a habit with MS. OTOH, PMView, which was written for OS/2, then ported to Windows and upgraded, still works just lovely on W7/Home and W8.1/64 bit. Have a good day, You too. |

So with LibreOffice, he gets his "office" at no cost. What I said. LibreOffice has failed every "quality" test I've given it. You get "half an office at no cost". And what's that worth ? About what you paid for it. ******* As an example, I tried to do an Excel-type chart project. Accept a list of maybe 80,000 ordered pairs and graph it. The program runs for about four or five minutes, and then declares "Allocation Error". No, that's not a main memory error. I thought that at first, but I started searching for that string. Well, where does that error actually come from ? The program uses OpenGL to draw a simple fricken chart. It seems to rely on an ATI OpenGL plugin that indicates how much free memory the video card has left. This plugin does not work properly. It's known that Microsoft broke it (as the video card memory management model changes from OS to OS, and ATI hasn't been able to fix the OpenGL plugin to do the right thing in each case). It's not even clear that NVidia has such a capability at all in their Windows OpenGL (because, of course, it would get broken). So I cannot make my simple chart in Windows with LibreOffice. It errors out. I don't think I can disable the OpenGL path. However, if I use Linux and LibreOffice, I'm able to complete my chart. So much for "half an Office"... I've had double-printed characters in Writer. There's a whole litany of sins. But you'll find out when you get there. Don't let me spoil the surprise. At least with the viewers, you'll be able to convert docx, xlsx, pptx you get off the Internet, into some other archival format, so you can at least read them. I usually convert to PDF for quick access. As long as the documents don't do anything too wacky, the translator package (FileFormatConverters.exe) will work OK. Paul |

Kingsoft Office is not bad either. You cannot expect that free product will be as useful as paid, but it does job for home and small office users. I use LibreOffice at home and it satisfy my needs. Mind you, I *know* there are some problems, I'm only saying I haven't encountered one yet in all those years. I used the OS/2 version of Lotus but when I had to by a new computer and OS/2 unavailable. I tried use MS Works as it came with my first MS Computer. The word processors was acceptable and it had a useable database. The spreadsheet was acceptable but could handle only the simplest of graphs. I then went looking for an office suit for home use I tried Open Office (It has been some years ago) which I understand has become LibreOffice. At that time I was quite pleased with the word processor, and if that had been the only criteria I would have continued to use it. The spread sheet was horrible. I tried a couple of other free Office suites with similar results. I had used both MS office and WordPerfect office at work and my first purchased Office suite was Word Perfect Office X-3 because of the revel codes, and the many more function in Quattro Pro. I am now on Word Perfect Office X-5 and hope to upgrade to X-8 when it comes out. The spread sheet has been the deciding factor in most of my decision on office suites. I consider myself and average spreadsheet user. My Stock Market spread sheet tracks the DOW and the S&P with data from 2007. One worksheet calculates the weekly and monthly changes in both the DOW and the S&P. This spread sheet has charts for the last 30, 60, 90, 120, and 180 days of the daily closing and daily volumes. I have two other spread sheet. One is for my assets, and is principally a database of the monthly closing data for my accounts and chart to track the change in the value of the assets since 2008. My Check book spread sheet usually runs with about two years of data and tracks the balances in my checking account, my credit accounts, and my savings accounts. Each purchase is coded and the the expenditure against the codes are calculated. I have similar spreadsheets to manage my church Chair of the trustees activities. I don't consider my uses of a spreadsheet unique. If those office suites like Open Office had been able to hand this type of spread sheet I would be using them today. If you are testing spread sheet performance, one test is to generate the data and plot the curve for the normal curve of error. 160 points will give a good definition of the curve create by the formula see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_distribution. And with the function use, give a good speed test. With Quattro Pro this takes a couple of seconds while the spread sheet is opening. With the OpenOffice based spreadsheets it took minutes. |
