IMO, it's Best Buy's "Look and touch all you want before you buy, we'll
order and deliver if what you want is not in stock". Personal service,
IOW. I like it.

Ditto. I still like going to physical retail stores to see, touch, etc.
And then, I will find the same exact product online to see if cheaper.
However, returning in a pain in the butt online compared to physical
stores. However, Best Buy and others can pricematch like Amazon
(their prices, not third parties).

If I've understood you correctly, you might consider replacing the
case instead. It would probably be less expensive.

Essentially building a new PC, since the power supply and motherboard
wouldn't fit in a new case. I expect I'll need to do this eventually.

If I find something in a physical store I usually buy it there and do
not see if it is cheaper online. It costs the store to have the product
for me to examine and if everyone then goes and buys it cheaper online
they will not stay in business. Paying more is the cost of being able
to examine the product and I will support a store by dipping into my
wallet so that I can do that.

I wouldn't be surprised. I think I spent about $400 to build
this box in 2015. That was also the cost of a low-end PC.
Today there are still PCs like HP for only $400-500. But the
parts prices are crazy. Though I recently bought a new
Samsung 500 GB SSD for use as my second drive. Only about
$70. Suposedly that's $50 off, though all the stores were
selling it for that price. I couldn't afford not to buy it.

That's a case where I ended up at Microcenter. I went
to 2 Best Buys. They claimed the item was on sale. Neither
store had it in stock. Staples also didn't have it, but tried to
upsell me to one of 3 other items instead. Microcenter.....
yes, 120 in stock!
I've run into that same problem before with Best Buy.
I don't know where they make their money. They always
seem to be out of stock.

Generally speaking, you can no longer build a unit at a better
price/performance ration than the ready-builts. At one time, you could
build last year's bleeding-edge gear for about the same price as a
current plain-vanilla ready-built. I did that four times. Looked into
doing the same about a year ago, decided against it.

The major exceptions are very-high end machines built for gaming,
massive video creation/editing etc. These tend to be custom-built in the
real world, too, so building your own just means doing what the other
guys do.

Building your own used to be a pretty good money-saver. Now it's a
hobby. and like all hobbies, it costs. You decide whether the fun is
worth the money. :-)

I agree. It's been a long time since I built my own. It's no longer
money saving *and* it has a big disadvantage:

The last time I built my own, what I saved in cash, I made up in
time. About a week for me to get it up and running. Good thing I had
that week.

When I needed an upgrade, "now", I found the one I could afford
online and clicked "Buy".

Someday, maybe I'll get around to doing the "migrating to a new
OS" fan dance and folderol.

Except he said "It was a unique design and the motherboard was made to
work with it", which I take to mean it at least had odd requirements, if
not having unusual connectors too.

I have a picture of the inside of this case, at notstupid.us/IMG_6331

Drives are attached to the top of the case, with the HD on the left
(behind the green plastic).

The power supply is located under a small card cage (since this case is
not tall enough for a full size card vertically) with 2 PCI slots.

I noticed yesterday, that Costco now has ordering kiosks for their
food court.

But no calendars, the week before the New Year.

For the last few years, I've been getting plenty of free calendars in
the mail (as well as additional stuff for curbside recycling).

Oh, wall calendars we got.

We were looking for the desktop "cartoon/word of the day" kind.

And in the long run it could turn out to be self-serving.
Last I heard Amazon was still losing money, only profiting
from their web services. Amazon shopping is not a new
option that's better than stores. It's a marketing strategy
that can't last.

Many years ago CVS set up stores all over and started
advertising sales on popular prescription drugs like Valium.
They also carried a massive selection and had cheap prices
on toiletries, make-up, etc. They drove the independents
out of business. But they didn't stay cheap. The cheap
prices were only used to establish a monopoly.
Home Depot has done something similar. The pattern
repeats over and over. And it works because people
usually only think about getting the most that they can
right now.

I don't expect Amazon will be able to take over retail,
but if they do they'll hold all the cards... and it won't
be a bargain.

Another issue that rarely gets mentioned: People are
increasingly worked up about global warming, yet buying
on Amazon means boxes and bubblewrap for every
purchase. For the people who buy 5 pair of shoes and send
back 4, that waste is doubled.
