I have been using Thunderbird news reader for many years and it works
fine up to version 60.9.1 after which my addons no longer work, so I
have stopped updates at that point and it is fine.

But I would like to add a second one as backup just in case, I like a
simmple one with no need for binaries and all the frills in most of them
that i have tried.

After going through half a dozen trials I have kinda picked *Pan* as
being easy to use with a simple classic interface,

Anyone using it? and if so do you have likes or dislikes? Do you thionk
it is a good Choice?

Thanks for any input.

I didn't like it because I couldn't set it up the way I wanted it.

I like my folders on the left and the messages on the right, and when
you click on a message, it will open full page. When I close that
message it goes back to folders on the right and messages on the left.

Of course I screwed that up.

I'm not using Pan. I use Tb but I have gripes. I like Tb in spite of
my gripes because it does format=flowed and rewraps. I don't use any Tb
add-ons so the great Moz tendency to wreck add-ons has never bothered me.

The other agent I like OK is Claws. Of the text-based, I like Alpine ok.

News agents are a very personal choice which is not always based on the
'quality' of the news agent. Ages ago when I was Windows, I used
Outlook Express for years in spite of so many things wrong with it which
required numerous 3rd party crutches, y-proxy, nfilter/newsproxy,
spampal, OEQuoteFix and maybe some other.

As usual you've just wasted your time trying to read my informative posts with your outdated, non compliant, news reader. All my posts now require HTML readers in the newsreader.

Therefore, just plonk me and you can swear at me to calm your damaged brain.

I use it daily and I'm quite satisfied with PAN.

with pan, and maybe other newsreaders, you can't have separate accounts,
there is one primary and the secondaries just fill in, with thunderbird
separate accounts are available, the choice of configuration might be nice

It's my first choice on any Linux distro.
I have not tried it on windows but it should be ok.
Actually, Pan does binaries very well as it automatically decodes and
assembles parts. If I wasn't using Newsbin Pro for binaries then Pan
would be my choice on windows.

After looking through the menus and features and trying things I really
found a shiny nugget which I haven't seen in any other reader .

The feature is called "Mute Quoted Text" activated by the keyboard
shortcut 'Q' this is really neat, you don't have to keep scrolling down
and down on long paragraphs of text to reach the meat at the bottom, one
tap on Q and your there, especialy when you have 10 or 12 replies with
the same text which you have already read.

The other feature I like is that I can change font and font size
individually in each of the 3 panels, groups, headers and bodies.

Microplanet Gravity has that feature.

And can do that as well.

And much more.

I can't find where to change text size in the body in gravity, groups
and headers works OK, also where is the mute quoted text feature located?
Some of these things are hard to find.

Thanks for any pointers.

Global options: article layout:
Click on Body in right hand box and then select Font/Color.

also where is the mute quoted text feature located?

Article menu: Mute quoted text. Or just press Q.

Press H to show/hide headers.
