Default To fit 3.5 HD as extra drive in new PC

New computer advertised as as having 2 X 3.5 inch drive bays.
However there is just a gap with no slots to fit drives into. What do I
need to buy.

Can you post pictures? Provide the name of the new computer?

I mean links, not just "pictures", of course.

If you wanted to install a DVD drive it would be easier. They come with
full frontal panel plus screws, and that fits neatly into the slot.
However, for a HD you'll need a container bracket like this;

and then you install your HD into the bracket, screw it into the slot,
connect rear cables (power and SATA), and boot.

You sure there's no mounting brackets/screws? Ask the manufacurer.
They should know best.

or maybe some drive rails, sometimes the spares are clipped into another
part of the case ready for use.

if we knew the brand of PC or case it might help ...

By 'no slots' does that mean that there is no obvious space where the
drives should go, or just that there are no rails, etc?

Some systems don't use brackets/carriers, the drive is just mounted in the
frame by inserting screws through the frame into the mounting holes in the
drive.

There will be a 3.5" drive cage placed behind where you pop out the
covers from the case's front. A case might have the pop off covers but
no drive cage behind it, or it could have the drive cage but no pop off
covers in the case front. It is was spec'ed to have two 3.5" external
drive bays, it should have the cage and case covers. If it has 5.25"
drive bays, you could use adapters to fit the smaller 3.5" drive into a
5.25" drive bay.

Rather hard to diagnose some undefined hardware. Is it a secret brand
and model of case, or secret brand and model of computer? If you don't
know brand and model of case or computer, take off the side panel, take
a pic, upload to online storage (imgur, tinypic, etc), and give the URL
to those uploaded pics showing the inside of the case. Also take pics
of the front of the case. "New computer" says nothing about what you
actually have.

Is there any reason you can't speak to the advertiser? Sounds like false
advertising to me. Or at least negotiate a partial refund.

Without knowing more about the computer, we can't really advise; I
presume it's some sort of desktop machine, if it uses 3.5" drives.
Unless it's a very unusual case, you might be able to salvage suitable
cages from old PCs - try your local recycling centre, charity
refurbisher, or whatever: the availability of all these varies widely
from country to country and within the country. (I've seen things
described here as being sold for pennies at a "garage sale" or "yard
sale" in parts of USA, for example, that make me quite envious.)

When you say "just a gap", where? Behind the front panel (if so top or
bottom), or somewhere else? Is the case a tower of some sort, or
horizontal? Normal size or "small form factor"? (SFF often don't have
room for more than one drive, so I'm guessing not.)

It was made by Novatech in UK and what they had done was fit the 2.5"
disk into a 3.5" bay.
DVD drive, then the gap plus what turns out to be a 2.5" drive in the
3.5" bay.
Their reply:
" Now that I've found the correct order I've taken a look into your
purchase with us. From the specification your case has 2X 3.5" bays. One
of those bays would have been converted into a 2.5" bay to house your
240GB SSD that is currently in the machine. As such there will be only
one free 3.5" bay.

You shouldn't need an adapter or anything like that to utilise this bay,
the drive should be able to screw directly into it"

Sounds fairly normal.

If you want to fit another 2.5" drive you'd buy a mounting bracket to
fit it, as they say a 3.5" drive you'd just fit it with screws ...

I expected it to have two free 3.5 drives and a 2.5 drive. It was
somewhat of a surprise to find it as it is.

It's not as though a 2.5" SSD is heavy, just stick it somewhere with
double-sided tape.

Or hot melt glue (very easily removed, when needed, with isopropyl
alcohol).
