Currently running 2004 fully upgraded. I noticed today that most of the
icons on my desktop have the usual little up-arrow in the lower left
corner, but some of them have a check mark instead. Is this supposed to
signify something?

it lets you select multiple icons with mouse click, usually only turned

arrows indicate the icon is a link to an actual file?

check marks let you know the files are backed up in OneDrive?

Maybe you are using an online sync client, like OneDrive or Google Drive
(aka Google Backup & Restore), to record what is in selected folders,
including the desktop folder. They can add an icon overlay regarding
status of synchronizing the files.

Rather than describe an image and have us guess what it is, take a
screenshot, paste into Paint, save into a file, and upload the file to
online storage (e.g., imgur). Then give the URL to the uploaded pic.
