Some time ago my Dell 8250 computer running Windows XP was "adjusted" so
that Outlook Express 6 would open automatically on start up. This was done
by a 'wandering minstrel' that I can no longer reach. At the time it was
useful and efficient and saved time.





NOW, I am considering moving to Web Mail, and so this "feature" is a
problem.


1. Could someone explain to me how I can remove Outlook Express from start
up so that it will not interfere with Yahoo Mail. At the same time I would
like to keep it available in case I need it again.


2. A related question... how can I easily move my file folders and saved
emails from Outlook Express to Webmail. ?

First, just a few points:

Now, on to your question:

1) I do not believe there is a clearcut answer within Outlook Express
itself. That being the case, you can open up the msconfig function and
disable Outlook Express from starting when you turn on your computer. Please
follow these steps:

- Click Start - Run

- Type "msconfig" (without the quotes) and hit the Enter key

- From within the System Configuration Utility window, select the Startup
tab

- Scroll through the startup list. You should see a line entry that refers
to Outlook Express. Once you find it, remove the check mark from that line
entry and then click Apply and then OK

- You will be prompted to restart your computer

- Once your computer restarts, a disclaimer window will appear telling you
that the System Configuration Utility was used. Put a check mark in the box
electing not to see that message again.


That takes care of the first question.




2) This question may be best answered by providing a couple of links. Please

What operating system are you using?


The way I use webmail with outlook express is just the opposite of what you
are proposing. I keep all my current e-mails on webmail, but then when my
webmail box starts to fill up, I pull down the older ones to my Outlook
Express for archiving.


This means that you need to set up a hold or a current folder on webmail to
ensure that they don't get pulled down, as once you have Outlook Express set
to recognize the webmail, it will pull down you entire inbox when it is
started. I have 10 MB of storage on my webmail and can access it from any
internet connected computer. The last time I checked, my Outlook Express on
my old desktop had over 250 MB of e-mails going back about 7 years.

The other possibility was the a link/shortcut to Outlook Express was placed
in your "Startup" folder. Go to Start Menu Programs Startup and see if
Outlook Express is include. If it is and you want to get rid of it,
right-click on the Outlook Express entry and then select "Delete" from the
pop-up menu. When you re-boot, it should not startup automatically.

As to getting your current messages into Web mail, that is easier said then
done. It will largely depend on your webmail service and how it works.

Sorry for the delay.

Your method of operation is just what I want to do. Perhaps I was not clear
on my reasons for eliminating Outlook Express from startup

It opened and automatically downloaded my emails! So now that it is tamed
and set to only download on command it can (or could ) work

in the same way you are set up. Is there any way to control what is
downloaded ? Right now SEND AND RECEIVE drops everything

into my box.

Hi ZinFan. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Normally, when you
either click Send and Receive or you let Outlook Express or Outlook
automatically download the emails, everything in your inbox donwloads into
the email client. What exactly do you want to accomplish?
