Which Windows 10 switch *remembers* Run commands?
In the olden days, I would click "start run something", where that
"something" would be remembered the next time I clicked "start run". Do you know what makes Windows 10 remember the last start run command? |

In Win 7, the things that you run are stored he HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\RunMRU Could be same or similar in Win 10. I'm guessing that's one of the keys that CCleaner clears. MRU = most recently used I don't know where the setting is to disable even storing that in the first place, but I remember disabling MRU back in the XP days. |

I solved the problem here - maybe this will help you. 1) Before it will remember the commands, you need to go to Settings Personalization Start then enable "show most used apps". 2) If that is greyed out (it was in mine) go to Settings Privacy then enable "Let Windows track app launches to improve Start and Search results" and then go back to 1) The current wording of these settings is bizarre and appears to have nothing to do with the situation at all - but it worked here. -- Tetbury, Gloucestershire, England "I am" is the shortest English Sentence. "I do" gets you the longest. |

Ccleaner removes it. Where the setting is ? Thanks for suggesting the culprit may be Ccleaner... I do use Ccleaner but only very sporadically, while the commands I type in "Start Run" are no longer there even without using CCleaner, so, it's not Ccleaner doing it. Even so, it's good to note that CCleaner does that, as I have almost everything checked... http://wetakepic.com/images/2017/10/24/ccleaner.jpg |

I solved the problem here - maybe this will help you. 1) Before it will remember the commands, you need to go to Settings Personalization Start then enable "show most used apps". Here is my current switch setup for... Start Settings PC Settings Personalization Start Everything is turned off: http://wetakepic.com/images/2017/10/24/personalization.jpg 2) If that is greyed out (it was in mine) go to Settings Privacy then enable "Let Windows track app launches to improve Start and Search results" and then go back to 1) I was easily able to turn on "Show most used apps" but if that switch does what it says it does, it's the *last* thing I ever want to see because I *know* exactly how to start apps. http://wetakepic.com/images/2017/10/24/personalization2.jpg In fact, I know *years* ahead of time, since I always put apps where they belong and I set up a menu system which makes sense, so, I know years ahead of time, on computers I don't even own yet, how exactly to start any particular app. Nonetheless, I turned that horrid switch on, to see if *that* solves the problem of the "start run" sequence being hidden from purview. The current wording of these settings is bizarre and appears to have nothing to do with the situation at all - but it worked here. Well, I must admit, it now does *remember* the "start run" activity! So, you're a genius ... if ... You're a genius "if" it actually doesn't show anything else such as recent apps in some horrid place. Looking about ... it does appear ... that ... you are a genius ... but time will tell. Thanks for that super not obvious suggestion which can only be borne from experience that you had that I did not have! |

Thanks for that runMRU key suggestion. My "runMRU" is blank no matter what I type into "Start run something". http://wetakepic.com/images/2017/10/24/runmru.jpg I'm sure it's something I turned off at some point, but what? You and Bob Henson figured it out together! When I implemented Bob Henson's suggestion, then the runMRU started getting populated with a list of the "most recently used apps", where, the word "apps" is a misnomer for "most recently typed things into the "Start Run" menu. http://wetakepic.com/images/2017/10/24/runmru2d55fa.jpg Notice the automatically generated key value of "abcd" but backward for the reverse order typed! |
