Reboot on startup
A few days ago I applied the latest updates.
Since then, my machine will reboot upon startup, then on the 2nd try...work just fine. It gets as far as the spinning dots, then stops when they are in the "C" position. Not a major big deal as Win10 is my second OS but just curious |

No, not an upgrade, just the standard updates. The Win7 install was upgraded to Win10 several months ago. Next time I shut the thing down I will check to make sure there are not additional updates in progress. |

To avoid accidental upgrade that prevent you from using the PC instantly, disable automatic updates. It's especially true if your PC or notebook is to be taken out to do a presentation. -- @~@ Remain silent! Drink, Blink, Stretch! To avoid accidental upgrade that prevent you from using the PC instantly, disable automatic updates. It's especially true if your PC or notebook is to be taken out to do a presentation. I did NOT upgrade accidentally I did so purposely. For years I had been running Win7 on a dual core machine with 4 gigs of RAM Recently I built a new Linux machine that has quad-core CPU and 16 gigs of RAM. I decided to take the Win7 hard drive out of the old machine and put it in the new machine and dual boot. Once I had the Win7 drive installed in the new machine, it booted up ok and installed the new hardware without a problem. Once it was all OK I upgraded to Win10 and it's been working quite nicely for several months. In general Win10 seems to be just fine. BTW: I still have a win7 installation on my old machine. I have a slide scanner with software designed for XP but it works fine on Win7...but only on 32 bit Win7 so that older machine will still have occasional use. That said, I have a newer slide scanner that works well on my Win10 machine, so when I scan slides I use Win10 Other than that , Linux has been my main OS |

Reboot on startup...follow up
On 10/26/2017
I just booted to Win10 now and it started normally. Before I shut it down I confirmed there were no more updates and none pending. All I can think is that after I updated the machine, while I was using it, more updates were being applied. |

Rather than more updates, check your Windows Update History, and see if some update was failing. It could have been retrying for some reason. Paul |

I think I must have shut down as they were installing. The Win10 installation does not get used much so evidently a lot of updates were needed |

On many occasions recently my system stops booting with an orange screen criss-crossed with a white squared pattern. This happened this morning, but keying control-alt-delete caused the machine to reboot and is now working normally. I've not been able to trace this to an update nor a disc error. Any help would be much appreciated. |

Any help would be much appreciated. This sounds like a video card problem. Check that the fan still works on your desktop video card. (This is easier said than done!) When the system is running, you can use a program like Speedfan or maybe GPU-Z, to get the video card temperature. A high temperature (like 100C), might indicate a fan failure. http://www.almico.com/speedfan452.exe https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ Video card fans don't have RPM indicators. Overheating video cards don't shut down the computer. The hardware is designed this way, to increase the sales of replacement video cards :-/ Start a separate thread, if you want to go into more details, about the hardware you own, whether it's a desktop or laptop, make and model, and so on.
