Setting File Explorer columns - and KEEPING them
Having set Win 10 columns (types and positions) I’ve several times used
the option to apply this to ALL. But this never seems to survive very long, even within a session (i.e. before a reboot). Is there a registry hack or a freeware tool that can achieve this reliably please? Can such customising also be applied for all 'browse' dialogues (Open..., Save As..., etc) as well as File Explorer folders? Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

You're not setting it e.g. on the pictures folder, then wondering why it hasn't applied to the music folder perhaps? |

Terry, East Grinstead, UK Right click on the Date section of the menu, then remove the check mark for Date. Scroll down to More and click on that to choose the details of what you want to see. Put a check mark in the box for date modified and then click OK. This will replace the Date column and you can add any of the details that you wish. They will be permanently displayed. At one time, the capacity to remember folders was limited by the integer dimensions of something with a similar name. It looks like they're adjusting things in a similar area here. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html An example here. Because it's called MRU, that implies Most Recently Used, and the cache could purge remembering "old" folders, to make room for "new" folders, whereas most users would appreciate it if *all* the damn folders got remembered. https://www.tenforums.com/customizat...options-2.html "Changing the cache by setting the number of folders to remember to 10000. HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell "BagMRU Size" DWORD 00002710 " I presume you could enter the number in decimal instead of hex. I thought some sort of setting like that, affected the ability to remember ten thousand folders. It was supposed to help, if your folder settings weren't sticking. Of course, the File Explorer has a mind of its own. If you throw two JPGs into a folder, suddenly it's computing thumbnails or something, and it's probably modified the folder customization stored in the desktop.ini in that folder. Amongst other things. If you put movies in there, maybe at some point it'll change its mind and do movie thumbnails. Being context sensitive has side-effects, in terms of keeping a stable view. HtH Thanks but, as mentioned, on my Win 10 PC that does not 'stick'. Nor does it get applied to other folders of similar type. I know how to customise the folder - but I'm having to do it virtually every time I open a new one. Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

No, I'm currently working exclusively with JPGs in a variety of folders under D:\Pictures\PHOTOS\. I have not yet had time to reboot since I used 'Apply to all folders of same type', but I wouldn't have thought that necessary... Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

Paul Thanks Paul, I think you're onto something. I found "BagMRU Size" actually a couple of levels lower, at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\All Folders\Shell It had no value assigned. I've optimistically modified it to 10000 and will test it after dinner! Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

My setting is now appearing on all half dozen or so 'similar' folders I've tried ;-) Any thoughts as to how that (rather important?) registry setting can have been created with no value assigned? Thanks for the lead, Paul. Terry, East Grinstead, UK Well, Microsoft never fixes anything, and it's our job to remember registry names from 15 years ago :-) I have no idea how it works, who messes with it, why it's designed that way. Presumably there is an alternative implementation they could pursue and implement, if they put their minds to it. Instead of working on the Facebook interworking code, or adding MSEdge to Android.
