Default SP2 wrecked my PC

When I installed SP2 I started having numerous problems, it tried to
reinstall Microsoft applications, I started having hardware driver crashes,
hardware acceleration on the sound card failed and gave terrible sound etc.

But the main problem was that is made my PC virtually unuseable, it took
upto 10 minutes to boot up and although it is a P4 2.6ghz with 1gb of RAM it
ran like my old Pentium 75mhz, constantly chugging away with the hard disk &
CPU running at full speed and getting nowhere fast.

The only solution was to uninstal SP2 and reinstall XP, defragging etc only
makes thinks a little bit better.

My PC now runs fine, I would love to know when Microsoft will be sorting
this out and until then SP2 is going nowhere near my PC.

Currently it is not necessary to install SP2 if you keep your system updated
with Critical Updates, update your AV, use a popup blocker as well as run a
firewall.

Since sp2 has been installed on millions and millions of computer with no
probs, the logical conclusion would be that the probs you encountered were
specific to your setup and not the norm for sp2 installs. Did you prepare
your system correctly before installing sp2?(get rid of viruses, spyware,
check if programs or hardware drivers need patches or updating, etc.) If you
do these things sp2 usually installs without a problem.
MS is going to sort out your computer as sp2 works fine. I'd suggest you
prepare correctly, do research on what hardware and software your computer
has and if it's sp2 compatable, update and clean as required, and try sp2
again.
If you have an oem machine, contact the maker as many oem machines have
proprietary junk in them.

Congratulations Harry!
It is great to see at least one MVP not afraid to give the correct answer
regarding SP2.
Some defend it so strongly you think it was their own baby.

Phil,

I did follow the instructions to prep my PC for the install of SP2 and if
you read all the posts on the XP newsgroups there are many others who
experienced similar problems.

Most users who have problems wont even be aware of this type of forum so I
fear the posts on here is the tip of the iceberg.

Before SP2 was launched there was quite a lot in the PC mags doubting
whether or not you shoud do the install and reading the posts on this forum,
I think the answer is not to install.

Harry Ohrm makes some valid points as I have Norton Antivirus & Firewall
(weekly system scans), hardware firewall and at least 3 spyware programs run
every week therfore SP2 currently is not worth the hassle or risk to my PC.

To each his own I guess. I've done over 50 sp2 installs and the worst
problem was a program had to be reinstalled. Other than that all the
installs have gone fine. Most were good machines, some of which I built for
customers, a few junk hp's and dells, but those worked fine as well. Sorry
your machine can't handle sp2 as I believe it's worth it to install.

Phil,
The problem I see is that a novice user won't know to get the prep
information before accepting the Windows Update message that SP2 is ready to
install. I, myself, encountered a problem with my MCE PC after upgrading to
SP2. I physically had to replace the DVD +R drive to get past the PC
stopping at the AGP driver (Ran safe mode).

You're talking to the wrong person here about what a novice should and
doesn't know about their tool, the computer. A novice should know this stuff
and if they don't they should find out about it. If you have a computer you
need to learn how to maintain it correctly. This includes installing
operating systems and service packs. If you don't have the time or want to
learn, then step aside and let others who do or want to. A computer is not
an appliance and it's not a toy. It's an expensive tool that should be used
correctly, so others don't suffer from your mistakes. IMO, marketing a
computer like an appliance to the masses is a mistake for the computer
industry at this time, but we all know that money talks......
Before they install sp2, if autoupdates downloaded it already, the user
still has time to prep before they say, go ahead and install. If they have
autoupdates set to download and install without asking you, then they are
relying on someone else to maintain there tool for them. Remember the old
saying....... if you want something done right, then do it yourself.

Sounds like, from this post, you had both driver and hardware problems
that were NOT dodocumented. It happens on motherboards that were not
specifically designed for XP (these work fine for initial setup, but may
not function with major upgrades like SP's).
One thing to consider doing is to completely remove all hardware drivers
- and checking for newest known drivers with their websites. After
removing the old drivers, install SP2 and restart, then install the Newest
known drivers (including the motherboard drivers) [I had a similar issue
with Me and Acer 350Mhz mainboard - which I later replaced] Been happy
since!!
