Continuing.... Since I had no i386 folder, I copied the CD i386
to my hard drive (in c:\ directory), and saw that it had most
of the 'fxs' series of files. Then I tried the install, and it
balked at a few, and I allowed it to ignore those, figuring I
can go back later and try to install those few. Eventually I
got it to complete the install, and now I have to find out which
files are missing, and get them into C:\i386, and uninstall the
partially installed FAX that I have, and see if I can reinstall it.
After that, I'll have to find out how to run it...I see it under
AccessoriesCommunicationFax but that doesn't do anything (yet).

You must have read what that irresponsible intruder wrote.....one
of the failings of this newsgroup system is that people who aren't
able to follow what is happening, or who don't bother to read
the messages thoroughly, think it's their place to jump in. I
guess we just have to ignore them. Eventually they get bored and
find other people to annoy for no other purpose.

You lost me here. Why would you put files into that folder? It's the source
for the installation - not the target. If you did put files here, they
should be the compressed form - not the expanded form.

Also, if you've been using "add components" from the CD popup screen, try
using Add Components from Control Panel instead.

It prompted, saying it needed file fxsevent.dll and
I browsed to i386 on the CD, and when I hit Enter, it
changed what was in my windows to \f\i386 or almost that,
but it never found the .dll file. Browsing on the CD I
find a zillion files starting ith fx .... and all with extension
.dl_ .....

Incidentally, I don't even have to go to Add/Remove etcetera.....
Just insertying the CD and waiting, its autorun starts it up
and gives me four choices, one of which is to Add Windows
Optional Components. That leads to the same impasse.

You and Rob are reminding me that I'm following the same
steps which didn't get that FAX installed last year. As a
scientist I'm curious as to why I follow the right steps
and get to where the 'uninstalled' .dl_ files are, and the
installer doesn't convert them to .dll files and install them.

I know I can buck it to the Microsoft insider Online Tech
support people, but I like to save that recourse for problems
that really *have* to be solved.

but it isn't entirely clear what is expanded and what isn't.
I think I expanded one .dl_ file and ended up with a .dll
file the same size. Thanks for the helpful contribution.

You need to sign up for a "service" on the internet that you send your
fax image to, and on their end they have a modem connected to the "plain
old telephone system" to make the call to complete the fax. Search
Google or equivalent for a service. A list I just found is at
http://www.savetz.com/fax/

FAX requires connection to the phone system.

Yes, it is on the servers at eFax www.efax.com

You pay every month to send, but can get a fax back for
free. The few faxes I do, I send from XP and if I want a
fax back I use the free eFax service.

Next day. When we last talked, I had succeeded, by overlooking
some files, to complete the FAX installation. But it can not
'configure', as indicated by FAX(empty) when I click on FAX
after AccessoriesCommunic.FAX. Not a surprise. So I took
the next step: I was going to uninstall it and see how far it would
reinstall.

I did Add/RemoveAll Prog.Windows ProgramsFax and I thought
it would uninstall (that's always been ambiguous to me). No, it
flew right on through the whole FAX installation, and some of what
it said along the way was that it was con figuring. Oh boy, I said
(prematurely). When I went back to AccessoriesCommunic.FAX
it still showed FAX empty. By left and right clicking around, I
got to a .INI file, and this is what's in it:

more clues as to how I can get past this roadblock?

Well... I guess this is good news of a sort. Even though Fax isnt' entirely
up and running yet, you've gone further with this than you did before.

Where are you finding the blank fax entry in the start menu? When I
installed it, the MS Fax items were the way the heck under Accessories
somewhere.

What is that faxini.txt file? Is it a leftover from the other fax software
you were trying? Looks like this is a text file, not an INI file. Open in
Notepad to see what it says.

Where to go next... Go over to the Printer and Fax folder and get the fax
printer installed. Also, may want to refer to that other article at this
