Default "Advantages" of SP2

Thank you Microsoft for finnaly showing the real face. Some helpful new
features are presented in SP2 like for example you cannot access the System
recovery anymore or Services are prohibited as well. The greatest improvement
was done on Help and Support, there is no Help and Support anymore. I could
go on and on with this, I know it yould mako no difference because it is not
SP2 that is doing this but whatever it yould sound right. So thank you
Microsoft again for sleapless night and I will keep you in my mind everyday
for the rest of my life.

Default "Advantages" of SP2

Just a sek, there were no what so ever problems with OS prior to
installation. My point was that, why call something Service Pack when
acctually is a Not going to be able to do anything Pack. I understand that
Critical Updates are lifesavers but for something that should improve the
System acctually brings it down. I am not alone here!
Not only that my system was up and running but also it has not been
connected to the Web or there were no additions made to the System. Simple
restart after installation and than...

Instead of defenfing SP2 try to help me!

If you had problems before upgrading you will have those same problems after
the upgrade. Don't expect SP2 to "repair" a failed or faulty system.

I had the same "issue" with Help and Support. I had set it
on Disabled a long time ago, but, pre-SP2 it didn't
prevent the H&S Center from running. After installing SP2,
H&S actually started to behave normally (i.e. when it is
set on Disabled, it doesn't start).

That is understandable but H&S is something that I am after here I can live
without it but System Restore or Search or User Account or Services or 10
min. wait on startup or anything else, I do not have control over, I cannot
modify. It reports a 1083 or 1086 somethimes 1056 error and that is it. I was
able to read Services that are running and there is not a single one that is
Disabled except the ones that everyone has disabled.

Maybe it's just me but I would uninstall SP2 via add/remove. I see no
advantage to having it and many many disadvanges.

1) Go Slow With XP's SP2
Many readers are wondering what to do about XP's SP2, which is starting to
trickle out in a limited release. But over the next few weeks, just about all
XP users will be offered the download in a carefully sequenced rollout
designed to prevent the overload of Microsoft's servers.

When you're offered SP2, my advice is: Do nothing; wait a bit.

SP2 is huge--- so big it's almost a whole new version of XP. Like any new
version of any OS, it *will* contain bugs, and it *will* cause trouble on
some setups. The more complex and/or nonstandard your setup is, the greater
the likelihood of a problem.

Plus, there's no "must have right now" element to SP2: Much of SP2 is
designed to force uninformed (or just plain lazy!) PC users to use basic
security--- to stay current with updates, to use a firewall, etc. (These are
the users running the unpatched/unprotected systems that allow most
worms/viruses to spread.)

But odds are, if you're reading this newsletter, you already know about and
are using pretty good security practices, such as good firewall, antivirus
and anti-spyware tools, and you're keeping up to date with Critical Updates.
If that's the case, you won't gain a lot by rushing into SP2.

Instead, wait a bit--- even as much as a month or two--- to let the worst
problems with SP2 come to light and be fixed on other user's PCs.

Again, as long as you're already using the kinds of security tools and
techniques we discuss in this newsletter every week (example:
http://www.informationweek.com/840/langa.htm ), there's no need to rush into
SP2.

I'm not the only one suggesting this "go slow" approach. See, for example
these other authors:
http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/60.htm
