Default Help with ie6, wmc, and sys restore on XPSP2

I have XP SP2 and most of the updates until around 9/1/05. I found a virus
with avast home edtion and deleted the file and now I have some problems. I
can't run system restore. The first time I try to open the application I get
a thinking icon and then nothing. The second time I get an empty window that
never brings up any text or buttons.

I can't open some pages with IE6 including windows update and most drop down
menus aren't visible, but when I open with firefox they are fine. Some pages
don't even load like hotmail and windows update. I tried to reinstall ie6 by
editing the registry per a tech note but it didn't work so I restored the
registry to previous settings.

I also get a message "An Internal Application error has occured" when I try
to open windows media player. I tried to roll back to 9 and then to 10 again
but still the same error.

I have also run a disk check and there are no bad sectors. I am trying to
not have to reformat but I don't know what to do. Any Help is much
appreciated.

Hi,

It looks like the system is infected with malware.
Here are some tips on Virus and Spyware removal and prevention:

Once the system is clean of virus/malware infection, you will want to purge all existing
restore points by disabling System Restore so the infections wont return.
How to Disable and Enable System Restore

If System Restore continues opens to a blank screen, then take a look at the following
link.
