After rebooting a couple of times the build number appears in the bottom right corner. A message appears in Action Center about 'Activate Windows now'. Entering the key results in a message saying the key can only be used for upgrading. So I was wrong and ...winston is correct! And yet this http://www.winsupersite.com/article/...e-media-144648 Seems to suggest it's possible. Ok, here's what I did this time. Booted a test machine with a live cd and quick-formatted the C: drive, NTFS. Then booted the test machine with my ESD-ISO dvd. Entered the key I paid for. Installed Windows 8. Signed up to the local account. Arrived at the Desktop with the build number in the bottom right corner. Clicked on Action Center and was told Windows couldn't be activated and that I should go to Windows Activation to activate. A new screen appears with an 'Activate with a new key' button. So I cancelled out of all that and rebooted with my ESD-ISO dvd. I entered the key and chose Custom install. On the next page there is the option to Format. So I formatted. Windows 8 installs again. After two reboots we are back on the Desktop and no build number. Right-click Computer Properties and we are activated. Clicking on 'View details in Windows Activation' opens the details page. On that page is a link 'Buy Windows for another computer' Clicking on that brings up a page offering me a Windows 8 Pro download for £24.99. (I almost bought another key!) So it looks like the same as Win7. It's interesting that it works on an un-activated install of Windows. |
