Cannot import into Google Contacts
There are new dialing rules where I live so I thought I would try to
edit my contacts. Opened contacts.google.com More Export All contacts Outlook CSV Export File saved as contacts.csv in my downloads directory. Edited that file and saved it as contacts-1.csv Back to contacts.google.com Delete all contats More Import Select contacts-1.csv Import and nothing happens! Fortunately, they have incorporated their own backup system so I didn't lose all my contacts but what went wrong???? |

Just a guess (based on their wording and lack of candor). You would expect the second older page to stop working at some point. Just as these advice pages can go out of date easily too. Paul |

Paul Alas, Google decided to move forward to new GUIs but those don't have all the options, so they continue to provide the old page. For example, I have to switch back to Legacy mode in Google Voice to get at many configuration settings that are not yet available via their new GUI. Each time I hit that need to switch to legacy mode, I send them another feedback asking to migrate ALL settings to their new GUI. The same for Contacts. When using their legacy GUI, there is a "Try Contacts preview" link. Their old contacts page keeps bouncing around while changing its size (the window keeps bouncing from showing and not showing the horizontal and vertical scrollbars), so they ****ed up something there. Sometimes changing the document width gets rid of the bouncing. In their preview version GUI, there is a "Switch to the old version" link at the bottom of the left pane. Once I switch to the old GUI, that's the one I get when I later login. I wish I could do the same with Google Voice and have it always login to their old GUI until they finally get around to expending the resources to finish development of their new GUI. Almost everything at Google for their services is treated as an experiment and why you cannot rely on anything surviving indefinitely. If it somehow doesn't generate revenue then I expect it to be an experiment and can disappear, and Google has made l-o-t-s of their experiments disappear. The only reason Gmail survives is they do earn revenue by farming out that service to business and schools (Yahoo and Hotmail do the same). Experiments (not always announced as such) that Google has dropped: Google Talk Google Hangouts (lost SMS, this will eventually become just chat - no idea if they'll move Hangouts Dialer into Google Voice) iGoogle Google Health Picnik Google Buzz Google Notebook Google Dictionary Google Labs Google Wave SearchWiki Jaiku Google Page Creator Google Answers Orkut Google Reader and many more. |
