Default Map you can actually print?

Hi All,

Is there a map web site out there that you can print out
on a laser printer that you can actually see the streets?

No luck with google maps and map quest.

I print googlemaps 'all the time' in grayscale.

I navigate the map so that the streetnames are big enough and I like the
features which google adds or subtracts depending on zoom, then I put it
into the clipboard w/ prtscr and paste it into IrfanView for
manipulation. Then I size it some more, such as zoom making the
streetnames bigger and convert it to grayscale. Then I use IV's color
corrections so I can tweak the brightness, contrast, and gamma, to
enhance the image before I print.

I don't use a phone at all when I drive on trips. I plan the trip in
advance and make a few B&W maps. Regular ol' inkjet, not laser. A
laser would be even better.

Hi Mike,

Gimp: convert to Greyscale:

Image → Mode → Grayscale

Then to Images, enhance, sharpen.

Thank you!

I have never found one and I use maps almost daily.
When travelling I take screen shots of the aerial / sat views and print
them in color.
There are several other maps that you can try but mappers all seem to
like pretty pastel colors that don't print.
Converting to B&W is impossible.
Others:
Bing.
OpenStreetMap.
Rand McNally.
MyTopo Free Online Topo Maps.

Then I inverted the colors and then selected the background
color and filled it with white.

I have not tried to print them but have your tried MS Maps, that comes
with the MS OS.

It is a pretty good map program.

Screen print and paste into Word.

Add comments in good text size and color at locations desired after
setting image to "behind text".

You can also enhance gamma in Google maps,
if you want color. But B/W saves on ink.

I wrote my own program for this, so I wouldn't have
to use multiple Google services and enable javascript.
Satellite, streetview, maps, and drawing tools all in
one window. Then Google stopped allowing free use
of their maps. Now you have to give them a credit
card. There's a high limit before they charge you, but
they reserve the right to charge. If anyone
steals your Google key you could be charged just
about any amount.

So, I switched to Bing. I had to sign up and get a
key but the free limit is high and if it's reached the
maps just get shut off. I was pleasantly surprised to
find that while MS doesn't allow their streetside maps
via the REST API (talking to their map server over http)
their general map quality is better than Google. And I
can get satellite, road, hybrid maps.

If you're curious:
https://www.jsware.net/jsware/bmapkit.php5

It's not as functional as the online services, but it's
easy, all in one place, allows moving around, zooming,
various map types, drawing, grayscale, save to JPG,
etc.

(If you download it, see the note about TLS encryption.
It explains how to get better encryption on XP/Vista/7
whether you use my program or not. My program uses
the winhttp library, which is used by a lot of programs.
It's that library that needs the update.)

Google maps after you enhance the contrast with a suitable
program. I used Irfanview.

Sure. I sometimes print maps from OpenStreetMap, so I can follow the
streets on the printed map.

https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/-36.86076/174.77636

I use the browser's "print preview" before printing, to ensure
the printed page will have the area I want.

* OpenStreetMap has a choice of 4 map "layers" (styles). Pick the
"layer" which gives you the best printed results.
* Printed results might look better on a *colour* laser printer.

Maybe marble? It is cross platform and free. Currently I can not test it
in this machine, so I can't say what it actually does.
