The good folks here are generous with their time, but you get better results when you provide precise information. Which email program are you talking about? And which version? And what do you mean by "info"? Do you mean settings, or copies of emails, or what? For Internet Explorer, at least some of the settings (which I _guess_ is what you mean by "info") are in the system registry, so you'll need to back up the registry files. See https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn479870.aspx for the keys involved. (and if you don't have one of the listed versions, that's why it's important to provide _precise_ information, like versions of products. -- Stan Brown, Oak Road Systems, Tompkins County, New York, USA http://BrownMath.com/ http://OakRoadSystems.com/ Shikata ga nai... |

"Standard Email"? What's that. You're right, I should have said, as provided by my ISP, Optimum. The good folks here are generous with their time, but you get better results when you provide precise information. Which email program are you talking about? And which version? And what do you mean by "info"? Do you mean settings, or copies of emails, or what? All the names, Email addresses, telephone numbers, etc. Im getting the impression that all this is kept by my ISP, and not somewhere locally on my PC, since my laptop has access to the same info. So, no need for backup here. Optimum Webmail does it for me. Whew ... |

Until they fold, of course - or their service deteriorates so much that, or prices rise so much that, you feel you have to part company with them. They've been a good provider for years : TV, Internet, Mail, phone, etc. A bit pricy but the service is great, including help with any issues.. I'd definitely not rely on a webmail supplier for the storage of contact information, or emails. I probably should have copied the info. Maybe I'll start. (Are you not also a little concerned about their _use_ of your contact list, especially if it contains 'phone numbers? Check your contract carefully ...) Nah. First of all, I don't include phone numbers or addresses in all the entries. It's mainly for the Email addresses. I've never seen any nefarious uses on their part. |

If so it would probably be somewhere in the app data catacombs, perhaps in a folder for your ISP. Next option: Look for some kind of export option in the webmail page. It's typically called an address book. You should be able to download that in some kind of universal format. 3rd option: Select and copy the whole thing, then save to Notepad and include in backups. It's easy and might save you a lot of trouble sometime. Why not also print out a copy? .... And of course I'd also agree with everyone else: Never, under any circumstances, use webmail. |

Yes, and I'll add to that that as far as I'm concerned, webmail is by far the worst way to do e-mail, for a variety of reasons. Almost any e-mail program is far better than the worst webmail site. So I suggest to casagiannoni that he at least try an e-mail program--not just for a day or two, but for try it for several weeks; give yourself enough time to learn it well and explore all its features, and discover for yourself why it's so much better than webmail. |

Webmail can be convenient when you have to use a different computer (or let someone else use yours to check mail), although IMAP with a mail program is better (including getting to make your own backups). The email I use allows webmail and IMAP with the same mailbox. I do backup regularly by having filters setup to copy mail to local folders as well as those on the server. -- 50 days until the winter celebration (Tue Dec 25, 2018 12:00:00 AM for 1 day). I agree, but I'm not sure you said what you meant. And if you meant "Almost any e-mail program is far better than the BEST webmail site" then I must respectfully disagree. Why not backup your entire system? See my http://www.rossde.com/computer/computer_backup.html. Indeed a possibility, but I just didn't want all the trouble. I do keep regular backups of critical stuff ( docs, spreadsheats, passwords, music mp3s, developed softeare programs, other special programs, etc. ). |

Maybe I needed a new hard disk With all of the replies here it is obvious that there are many different requirements depending on individual circumstances. Primary: There is NO BACKUP unless there are at lest TWO independent copies of the info. I am also an Optimum user and I travel. Win 7 Desktop at home and iPad and iPhone while away. I use Gmail web-mail because IMO it has the best spam filters and message filters which Optimum does not offer. My contact list is on my D/T AND iDevices. While home my d/t is backed up nightly to NAS and includes contacts. While traveling, if needed, I can access NAS over the net. Primary email access is thru FireFox. Secondary on D/T is Thunderbird IMAP. iCloud can be configured to copy contacts if you want a suspender to go with your belt but there is NO back up without at least two copies. -- Zaidy036 |
