XP Mode on Windows 7
I installed Windows 7 Professional on my computer and now I am trying to
install the XP Mode/Virtual Machine and it keeps stopping just short of finishing. I get the red X and the message that it didn't install correctly, please try again. I followed the instructions to validate my copy of Windows and did the test to make sure it was capable of running a virtual machine. Is there something that I am missing? I'm not getting any specific error messages, just the same thing happens every time without the installation completing. Anyone have any suggestions? My machine is a home build with a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 Motherboard, AMD FX-8350 8 core 4.00 GHz Processor with 16 GB Ram |

SP1 added manually or from Windows Update ? Windows Update for all Security Patches ? Install Windows Virtual PC first ? Install WinXP Mode package. Which should unpack a VM of some sort. With perhaps a VHD or VHDX file as an image of WinXP. Now, when all of that is finished, look for recent files ending in .log, and perhaps you'll get an indication of what step is failing. I would not expect the download or initial install step to get too far, unless a qualifying OS is being used. And as far as I know, Pro is good enough for that. My Home Premium on the other hand, would not be good enough to qualify for the WinXP Mode package. The BIOS may have an entry for VT-X or Vanterpool technology, which is support for virtualization. Strictly speaking, that isn't absolutely necessary. As in VPC2007, you could run with that enabled or disabled, and Windows Virtual PC is just another version of VPC2007. You could use some tool to verify that Vanterpool setting actually took. Again, if the installer expects that as a pre-requisite setting, it would likely stop at the beginning, rather than at the end. At the end, sounds like time to update the Registry. There's a virtualization checking tool here, for what it is worth. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en And at the end of this thread, reports of a corrupted file. It would help if some twit would offer a checksum, for future reference :-( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...um=w7itprovirt OK, so even though I can't use it, I checked my file collection. I have two things in that folder. From Nov2,2009. WinXP_mode_Windows7 WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe 492,597,008 bytes MD5=bf3726d684d3acb98185665123c9efcf Windows6.1-KB958559-x86.msu 9,591,606 bytes MD5=af256856f06be651e05e47a5cead3728 Now, if I actually look for KB958559, it looks like a reference to Windows Virtual PC. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958559 And the link off that page goes here, and it has the usual ~16MB Virtual PC software. As a guess. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...s.aspx?id=3702 Version: 6.1.7600.16393 Date Published: 2/14/2011 Windows6.1-KB958559-x86-RefreshPkg.msu 15.3 MB Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu 16.3 MB I don't know why my MSU is so small in this case. (Maybe the word Refresh means it's a later version ?) To work out the MD5SUM on your download, you can use Microsoft FCIV. fciv -md5 WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841290 (FCIV download) Paul |

After further research I found that this problem is caused by some AMD processors. Microsoft has a "hotfix" for it, however to get the OPK, or the Windows 7 OEM Preinstallation Kit needed to install the hotfix you have to be in some kind of business that builds or services computers running Microsoft products. After about the fifth page of filling out forms and crap I gave up. I was able to download the hotfix from the first page at microsoft.com where I found the answer to my question. However, the get the OPK is where I ran into the snag. Really Microsoft, do you think that individuals don't build and take care of their own computers????? |

AMD doesn't seem to want to fix their own problems is what I think is the real problem. My AMD machines also experience a lot of nonsense like this. -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - OE-QuoteFix v1.19.2 Centrino Core2 Duo T5600 1.83GHz - 4GB - Windows XP SP2 |

Windows Virtual PC runs on a single core, so it's hard to imagine how the Bulldozer would cause a problem. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2519949 The file mentioned is Vpcvmm.sys . Try Googling that, and see how the "home hackers" do it :-) Hmmm. Now, here's a problem that involved Intel processors, and the same file. So much for AMD versus Intel theories. I think the Windows Virtual PC designers are to blame. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977632 ******* http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...um=w7itprovirt And that thread references this KB. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2652034 You could check Windows Update, and see if those are applied already. It looks like you can use the web form to request 2652034 be sent to you by email. Perhaps the version of Vpcvmm.sys is even later than the other one. It would also be interesting to see, if installing Windows Virtual PC, then visiting Windows Update, causes any of the above patches to show up in Windows Update. A Hotfix can always be superseded by a Service Pack, and you would want to compare the Service Pack 1 date, against any of the above articles. It is not always appropriate to use a Hotfix, if the Service Pack installed it for you. Paul |

Paul They did email me the hotfix, it was the OPK or the Windows 7 OEM Preinstallation Kit where I hit the snag. To get that they wanted me to become a "member" of some kind, wanting to know the name of my business, and all kinds of detailed information. After about two pages of that crap I just exited out. The hotfix cannot be installed without the OPK, so I am stuck unless I want to give up my firstborn or whatever it is they are after before they will part with that. |
