I have a fairly new Win 7 Home Premium laptop and would like to go to
Win 7 Pro so I can use the virtual PC ( and have Win Media Center if there is no good alternative to MC). Where can I get the upgrade (cheap)? I have a Win 7 Pro Upgrade DVD that I used on a desktop PC. Can i use that? (after I downgrade the Win 7 Home desktop PC I used it on) The laptop does not have a cd/dvd internal if that makes any difference. --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: --- |

Save yourself some problems and use Virtual Box https://www.virtualbox.org/ It should run fine on Win7 Home Premium |

Where can I get the upgrade (cheap)? I don't know the answer to the cheap part. The 'easiest' way is based on the fact that everything for Pro is already inside your Home Premium and you can unlock it by simply using a legitimate Windows 7 Anytime key which you can purchase. The problem is that my initial shopping didn't find one cheap. Amazon says they are out. Some crazy website's shopping function wasn't working correctly and showed it listed and in the shopping cart at $980. The best deal I've found so far is $100. I have a Win 7 Pro Upgrade DVD that I used on a desktop PC. Can i use that? (after I downgrade the Win 7 Home desktop PC I used it on) That would seem to be possible but you would have to be interacting with the right kind of MS licensing transfer person. It seems to me that if Anytime key mechanics can upgrade, it could downgrade the desktop as well as upgrade the LT. In a perfect world, some MS license handler would give you a key to downgrade the DT and another key to upgrade the LT. I have a feeling that isn't going to happen that smoothly. The laptop does not have a cd/dvd internal if that makes any difference. It wouldn't need it for the Anytime mechanism. -- Mike Easter |

I was told that the laptop only had Win 7 Home Premium. So that would
mean that "Anytime" would not work. Also, I see Win 7 pro 64 bit OEM upgrades for around $140. Is that any good to use? i.e. OEM vs. what? --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: --- |

A different Anytime is used on such as Starter to Home Premium - also cheaper. Also, I see Win 7 pro 64 bit OEM upgrades for around $140. Is that any good to use? i.e. OEM vs. what? I don't know what you are looking at but the OEM licensing is about a MS license to use the software the specific manufacturer installed on just that machine; whereas if you obtain/buy 'your own' MS license and disk you have a different kind of license how to use the software. -- Mike Easter |

OK. I purchased a build it myself desktop (MB, RAM etc all separate
items) and also an OEM Win 7 Pro for it. It was not a pre-built PC by some OEM. --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: --- |

Even various OEM versions have differing terms, depending on the exact path to the end user. |
