Default Replacing printer...Advice

For an XP with SP3 all updates.
my HP Photosmart 5460 is an ink guzzler.
It cleans its heads way too often, and sure enough , the indicator shows
appreciatively less afterward.
I've always used an inkjet, don't mind continuing. I was happier with
my RBY, instead of the cyan magenta yellow.
Have a stand-alone fax and scanner, no need for another. Should print
ok true colored photos.
Most of the printer ngs are gone, it seems, Suggestions?

I had an Epson that was an ink guzzler and the 6 cartridges cost about £50
to replace each time. Something went wrong with it so I dumped it and I
bought a Kodak Hero 5.1. It scans, copies and does all the things that a
multifunction printer does including cloud printing. I am very pleased with
it and it only needs a black ink and a colour ink which are available at
very reasonable cost. The only downside is that colour printing isn't as
good as the old Epson but I just download all my photos that want printing
onto a memory stick and take it to Jessops for printing.

If photo printing is your thing I would get them done commercially, you
would be way better off going to say Staples or even Walmart with your
pictures on a USB stick. Let them bear the cost of printer upkeep. The
cost for home just isn't worth the crappy job they do. Of course if you
just want a throw away toy to play with any brand will do.

For home use Kodak has the best ink to copy price by a long shot. It
does a tolerable job on disposable web page printouts, a flight boarding
pass for example (why color is needed is beyond me) and is very good for
black & white document copies. About $30-$35 for a pair of Kodak brand
cartridges (one black and one color) that are refillable but at that
price point hardly worth the bother. Cartridges last the two of us at
home a long time (doesn't dry out or time out) but then we don't have
kids doing home work or just outright wasting ink and paper, nor do we
expect it to do photos so are not disappointed in that regard. This one
is an ESP 5250 used for nearly 3 years and its still working fine (all
in one flatbed + wifi). I would buy another when/if the time comes to
replace it.

In this day and age of laptops/phones/ipods and such every where you
look WIFI capability is a must. The flat bed feature makes a handy home
copy machine. Never used the fax capability so have no opinion on that
outdated technology. Do people really still fax things on a regular
basis? Except as an absolute last resort, we don't even do that any
longer at the office.

Stay far-far away from Epson the ink ripoff company. Junk printer and
timed miniscule multiple cartridges did not make for a good experience.
I threw a working one in the trash in favor of the Kodak.

HP at one time made the best inkjets on the market but sadly have
morphed into a 'buy our over-priced ink as often as often as possible'
company.

If your needs run into mostly black & white a laser is your best bet.
Brother mid range lasers are very good in that department ($300+).

I see a couple of suggestions for Kodak printers in the replies, and I
have to say I hope they have improved drastically in recent years
because models just a few years old that are connected to computers I
service, are terrible. The ink prices were/are good, but the ink was
depleted rapidly, there were known issues with ink drying out, clogged
heads, and more. I've had a couple of clients throw away 4 year old
Kodak All-In-One printers that would no longer print due to print head
problems and replacement heads were not worth the cost. Perhaps it was
a particular model or two (the ones in question had very bad customer
reviews even on Kodak's own site), but from my experience with Kodak, I
would not recommend their printers. The quality of the print jobs was
good, but not the quality of the hardware.

HP makes good printer hardware, but there accompanying software has a
history of being as troublesome as some older Norton anti-virus apps,
and the ink is expensive. I stand by Canon printers as the best buy
all-around for quality and reliability. Whatever printer you choose,
read details carefully as to whether it has just a black and a color
cartridge, or a black and multiple color cartridges, and check reviews
for customer satisfaction and issues.

You didn't actually read the article, did you?

Citigroup is providing Kodak with $950 million in financing to
allow the company to keep going. Kodak plans to continue
operating normally during bankruptcy.

Kodak filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and is not being liquidated.

Right. But it isn't a sustainable company. It has a name in technology
that has been supercedded, has nolt been able to keep up with technology and
filed for Chapt. 11 for those reasons. Thus not a suggestionable company
because their future is uncertain.

That being stated...
I was at a person's home Yesterday because she got a new Acer notebook with
Win8/64. She has a Dell WinXP desktop connected to a Kodak ESP 5200 series
printer. A USB only printer. I downloaded a program that represented all
Kodak printers. It was Win8/64 compliant and indicated there was software
fior the ESP 5200 Series fore Win8/64. It downloaded 75 ~ 100MB worth of
software to trhe PC but I could not install it for a UNC. Thus I had to
move the USB cable to to the Win8 NB and let the software finish the
installation then change the printer port from USB to a UNC share so the
Win8 NB could use the Kodak 5200. The good news is that it worked and the
software was Win8/64 compliant. The bad news is the kludgy way I had to
download one program that had to download the other software onced I
identified the Kodak printer model and I could NOT just download a Win8/64
Printer Driver.

There are *many* hardware manuafacturer's that are well entrenched in the printer market,
have been so for decades, and will continue to do so making their availability and
certainty a more viable presumption.

Maybe a Dell laser printer? Can be had for under $100...
I'm thinking just black, because for the printing to stop when one of
the colors gives out, and then having to replace the toner unit does
not please me.
