AbbyyFineReader

I've been running AbbyyFineReader OCR software (for producing editable
text from scanned images) for many years. It was free on a magazine
Cover Disk. It used to run fine on Windows XP and, more recently, on
Windows 7 32-bit professional.

I've just bought a new computer which runs Windows 10 64-bit
Professional, and FineReader won't run on it. It appears to install ok
but opens very briefly and them immediately closes. I've tried all the
compatibility options, and running as Administrator - all to no avail.

Any clues as to how I can make it work? OK, I know that newer versions
are available, but these cost hundreds of pounds (I'm in the UK).

Alternatively, can anyone recommend free or inexpensive software which
does a similar job. I've installed NAPS2 but that seems only to produce
PDF files, and I can't see how to get editable text from it.

Depending on the document content, Word often does a
decent job. It doesn't do well if there are lots of
graphics, but is usually okay with text.

FineReader 4 Pro from PC-active 2002

FineReader 6 is looking for TWAIN support in this example.

There was TWAIN, WIA, WIA2. You should need administrator
to access raw hardware interfaces (a "service" could
do this for you).

Compatibility isn't going to help, if there
isn't a working TWAIN subsystem.

Later versions of the ABBYY product, fiddle with the
Office Menu Bar, which is likely to incur some
wrath from Windows Defender. If your AV product keeps
a log, perhaps it has an entry for the "incursion"
it stopped.

There might be another framework that came after WIA
but I'm unable to find it. I think almost no manufacturer
was willing to use it. Can't seem to find a reference to it.

Its usually included with Epson scanners so if you have one of those
look on the install disk to see if there's a 64bit version.
Someone's offering Omnipage 19, Kofax, used to be Nuance, as a
download on eBay for £12.92 (or best offer) on eBay, promising
lifetime updates.

It appears that Nuance has sold off Omnipage, and I see no download available on their site. I
suspect the eBay offers are scams.

Is the ancient version you got from some CD taped to a magazine a
16-bit version program? 16-bit programs won't run on 64-bit Windows.

Windows included a WOW (Windows On Windows) emulator to run old
software. Windows XP (32-bit) came with WOW32 which allowed 16-bit
programs to run under the emulator running on 32-bit Windows XP.
64-bit versions of Windows come with WOW64 which allows running of
32-bit programs on the 64-bit OS. There is no WOW32 emulator in 64-bit
Windows that lets you run 16-bit programs under the 64-bit OS.
Backwards compatibility grants running the prior bitwidth programs, not
even older smaller bitwidth programs.

Alternatively, can anyone recommend free or inexpensive software
which does a similar job. I've installed NAPS2 but that seems only to
produce PDF files, and I can't see how to get editable text from it.

No, I'm pretty sure that it's a 32-bit program. It wouldn't even install
if it was 16 bit. It tries to run - displaying a start-up logo very
briefly, and then dying. The Windows error log indicates a problem with
fobj420.dll - but when I downloaded and installed a later version of
that (unless I didn't do it right!) it made no difference.

I (still!) have office 2007, and that has a version of OneNote, but I

Meanwhile, I've installed FreeOCR which looks quite good, albeit a bit
slow. It doesn't have anything like FineReader's correction tools - but

I have 'ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint' which came with my Epson scanner.
I got it when I still had Windows Vista, but now have it on Windows 8.1
(64-bit Windows, 32-bit version of ABBYY FineReader) and it works fine,
despite Epson saying it's not compatible with 8.1. No idea if this
version works on Windows 10.

If you're really desperate, I can try to dig up the installation CD
and send its contents to you via wetransfer.com (assuming the email

FineReader work - all to no avail. Whilst I do relatively little OCR,
and have found workarounds for myself, I'm trying to persuade my wife to
move to Windows 10 (from XP!) and she uses FineReader a LOT and isn't
easily going to settle for anything else.

The stated email address does work. I do wonder though whether your
version has been doctored so as to only work with an Epsom scanner
rather than with any TWAIN compatible scanner.

I just copied the files/folders from the CD with File Explorer, i.e. I
did not make an ISO image of the CD. I think that won't make a
difference for the installation program.

I do wonder though whether your
version has been doctored so as to only work with an Epsom scanner
rather than with any TWAIN compatible scanner.

If that's the case, then, according to my notes, you can work around
that by first scanning to JPEG (*.jpg) (or another image format?) format
and then in FineReader do File - Open Image...

I used that workaround when I only had a PDF of a scanned document
which I wanted to convert to OCR text. I converted the PDF to JPEG with
(Windows) 'Snipping Tool' and then processed the .jpg file with
FineReader.

Please let me know when you have installed the software, so I can
remove the files/folders from my system.

I am a moderate user of ABBYY and when I recently did a fresh install
of of W10 I found the ABBYY installation disc had vanished. The return
address on this posting is valid.
