Default can i set IM to show off line automatically when starting up?

Is there any way that IM can show me as "off line" when it automatically
starts up. I dont want to have it show me as on line and then me have to
manually set it "show as off line". I am trying to avoid an ex seeing me
online.

thanks

daisy

A very good question as I have wondered about this as well, in the meantime
would it work to just block the undesirable person, then they won't know if
you are logged on or not even if you sign in as online.

would they know I had blocked them though? I dont want to antagonise them

They are block detecters out there, but they only function if you open the
persons window when they are blocked.

There are no other methods of detecting a block apart from that, so you're
safe.

All the blocked person will see is that you are Offline. Permanently
- or until you remove the block.

Exactly my experience. Thanks for letting me know I am not going nuts ;-) I
tried several ways but there was never a reliable way to check if I blocked
or not.
