Default annoying messenger popups

Hi,

These messages are caused by the windows messenger service, however, the
messenger service is not the problem, the real problem is the fact that you
are not running a firewall, or if you are, you haven't blocked ports
137-139.

Disabling the messenger service will stop the popups, but if you have file
and print sharing bound to your external TCP/IP connection, then you could
also potentially be sharing your entire hard disk with the world since
netBIOS uses ports 137-139.

A good firewall can be found at www.zonelabs.com

The small "ShootTheMessenger" Messenger service enabler/disabler will turn
off the messenger.

http://grc.com/miscfiles/ShootTheMessenger.exe

Or you can do it manually:

Disabling the Messenger Service
To remove the ability for anyone in the world to pop up messages on your
computer, you can disable the Messenger service. Its easy to reverse at a
later time if you wish to do so.

Windows XP Home
Click Start-Settings -Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Windows XP Professional
Click Start-Settings -Control Panel
Click Administrative Tools
Click Services
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

HTH

Default annoying messenger popups

Greetings,

Do these "popups" that are appearing have "Messenger Service" in their titlebar? If so, what
you're seeing is the Messenger service built-in to Windows, *not* Windows Messenger (which
are two different things) which spammers are exploiting -- this is not Microsoft, nor can
Microsoft control them anymore then they can control spam to your e-mail inbox.

To get rid of these pop ups, you'll need to disable the "Messenger Service", click Start,
then Run, enter "services.msc"and click OK. Scroll down to "Messenger", select it,
right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Disabled' and then
choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped, click OK. Nothing in Windows or any
real third-party applications should be effected by this.

Heh. Is this the intensely complicated and technical
tweaking that http://www.messagestomper.com spammed me
about?

The other day I got an email spam advertising anti-spam
software. These people have no sense of irony, do they?

There's a store down the road offering a p-200 complete
system for $25 ... I'm thinking I'll go get one, install
OpenBSD - http://www.openbsd.org (or maybe ClosedBSD, a
FreeBSD mod - http://www.closedbsd.org) and run that for
a firewall box. *sigh* I was really hoping to avoid the
time spent on that project, but looks like I don't have a
choice if I want to share files in lazy fashion (ie no
password).

Thanks for the how-to, Jonathan. At least I can go back
to playing Arcanum w/o getting spammed in the middle of
it
