Default O.T. Malwarebytes

I have a Dell XPS 8500, with Windows 7 Professional, SP1,
with Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Avast , Windows Defender
and Windows firewall.

(1) TB HD
Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-33-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz
Ram 12.0 GB
System type : 64-bit operating system

I also have

I have a Dell Optiplex 780 Tower, with Windows 7 Professional,
SP1, with Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Avast , Windows Defender
and Windows firewall.

Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB
Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal
System type : 64-bit operating system

and (external hard drives)

(8500)
WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200
RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal
Hard Drive

(780)
Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB
Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
Internal Hard Drive

Today when I tried to do a scan on the 780
with malwarebytes it opened with this:

https://postimg.cc/JGSsW6Cv

I didn't select to try premium and there
seems no way of getting out of this and
running the free version only.

The 8500 is not affected and runs the free
version as normal.

Thoughts/suggestions?
Robert

Are you running the same version of Malwarebytes on both machines?

I just installed the latest version, 4.0.4.40 on a brand new W10 system.
I selected the free version when I downloaded.

I have the same screen, and in the upper left corner it says "Free".

I think they are just pushing us to upgrade. Don't click the link. G

Ken,

I have the same screen, and in the upper left corner it says "Free".

What do you than click there ?

Don't click the link. G

Which one(s) ? Even the big blue "scan" button is in a sub-area which
mentions the premium version (and not the freeware one!) as being scheduled.
Clicking it might well be considered as an agreement to the upgrade. :-(

I think they are just pushing us to upgrade

Funny, a company which claims to help us to protect us from products from
malversant, but seems to use the very same mechanisms to trick their clients
to do something that makes them money. :-(

If I would see such a dialog the first thing I would do is to restore a
backup and put the involved company in my "not to be trusted" list. :-((

The upgrade link, since that's the subject of Robert's post. When you
click "Scan"", it scans the system.

Since Scan and Upgrade don't have the same meaning, isn't it a real
stretch that you are agreeing to an upgrade?

I think they are just pushing us to upgrade

Malwarebytes has had this for years.

And, from the standpoint of malware infections, what would this gain
you? You've likely still got the malware.

Ken,

What do you than click there ?

Nothing. LOL Just pointing out the obvious, Robert is running the free

I was aware of that latter part. But as you seem to be unaware of what I
asked, I'm going to spell it out for you: if /you/ would be /him/, which
link would you click ? And why ofcourse.

The upgrade link, since that's the subject of Robert's post.

No, its not. Read the first line of his question (directly after stating
his computers configuration): "Today when I tried to do a scan", and just a
few lines down "running the free version only".

When you click "Scan"", it scans the system.

With what ? The free version, or the scheduled premium one as mentioned
directly above the button?

Since Scan and Upgrade don't have the same meaning, isn't it a real
stretch that you are agreeing to an upgrade?

No, not really. Accepting the scheduled premium scan implicitily accepts
the upgrade to, as the former cannot be done without the latter.

Malwarebytes has had this for years.

And that is supposed to make it any better ? It doesn't. If that is true
many people must have complained about the (at least) confusing presentation
over the years, and they have refused to alter it. Another strike against
them.

And, from the standpoint of malware infections, what would this gain you?
You've likely still got the malware.

Ah, you only run that software /after/ you know* that you have been infected
? Sounds pretty stupid to me. Better make sure you do not get infected
in the first place. :-)

*which only works for malware that gets into /your/ face, not for the same
which just wants to either silently siphon (password or other) data or use
your 'puters resources to target other people.

As for what it would gain robert ? Not paying for something he indicates
he doesn't want seems to be good goal, don't you think ?

Rudy Wieser

I thought your question was the general "you" tossed out to the crowd.
This just points up the problem of electronic communications. What the
author Rudy Wieser is trying to ask with a question may not be the
meaning that reader Ken Springer attaches to the words Rudy writes.

I would not click upgrade, since I do not want to upgrade. I would
click scan because I want to scan. Sounds pretty simple to me. :-)

The upgrade link, since that's the subject of Robert's post.

No, its not. Read the first line of his question (directly after stating
his computers configuration): "Today when I tried to do a scan", and just a
few lines down "running the free version only".

OK... He wanted the free version, he got the free version, and he's
running the free version. Isn't that what he wanted?

Unless, of course, it's possible he clicked the 14 day trial button.
But he's responsible for doing that, no one else.

When you click "Scan"", it scans the system.

With what ? The free version, or the scheduled premium one as mentioned
directly above the button?

Rudy!! The free version, of course! That's the version he's running. G

Since Scan and Upgrade don't have the same meaning, isn't it a real
stretch that you are agreeing to an upgrade?

No, not really. Accepting the scheduled premium scan implicitily accepts
the upgrade to, as the former cannot be done without the latter.

In this case, it does not. To run the premium version, you have to
choose to click the upgrade button, or the free trial button. If Robert
did either of those, it's his mistake. Click the scan button, and you
run the free version. There is no message stating you're running the
premium version.

All I see so far is a misunderstanding on Robert's part, and now yours.

Malwarebytes has had this for years.

And that is supposed to make it any better ? It doesn't. If that is true
many people must have complained about the (at least) confusing presentation
over the years, and they have refused to alter it. Another strike against
them.

It didn't confuse me. Some of the older free versions actually did run
in the trial version for 14 days automatically. But it was clearly
stated, if you took the time to read the screen. It was the trial
version and would automatically revert to the free version if you did
not upgrade.

It's marketing, many companies do this. Don't like it, don't use it.
The program still works. Get over it, and move on.

And, from the standpoint of malware infections, what would this gain you?
You've likely still got the malware.

You've always had the option to choose what to remove if you wish to
remove it.

Ah, you only run that software /after/ you know* that you have been infected
? Sounds pretty stupid to me. Better make sure you do not get infected
in the first place. :-)

The free version doesn't run in real time. Want real time scanning?
Pay for it.

Don't want to risk infection? Turn the computer off and be done with
it. As an intermediate step, don't use Windows.

*which only works for malware that gets into /your/ face, not for the same
which just wants to either silently siphon (password or other) data or use
your 'puters resources to target other people.

Pay for the premium version and use real time scanning, or manually run
the free version on a regular basis. Robert's probably a big boy, and
can make his own choices.

As for what it would gain robert ? Not paying for something he indicates
he doesn't want seems to be good goal, don't you think ?

Which is exactly what he's doing. :-)

Bull****. Your name is above my response, and I quoted what /you/ said.

I would not click upgrade, since I do not want to upgrade. I would click

So simple that you didn't even bother to mention to the OP - the OP which
made clear that he was confused about the pages layout ? Bull**** again.

OK... He wanted the free version, he got the free version, and he's
running the free version. Isn't that what he wanted?

He /isn't/ running the free version, as he, and no doubtibly many others,
has no idea where to click to get that free version AND HAS SAID SO.
Bull**** trice and game over.

Goodbye kiddo.

If Robert did not read and understand the Malwarebytes web page, and got
the wrong version, that's his responsibility, alone. I read the web
page, got what I wanted, which is the Free version for home users.

Based on his screenshot, which is the same as mine, he got and is using
the Free version. If he is misunderstanding the information presented
to him, that's his responsibility alone.

now both computers have the same problem.

I'm afraid if I click scan it will launch

It seems like they are trying to force the

In retrospect, it's probably better I go with
malwarebytes premium since Win 7 support will
be ending soon.

Hi, Robert.

They used to force the 14 day trial, but not with this version, anyway.

Clicking the Scan button does not force the trial, at least not here.
And I've done it twice. G

If with a piece of software you got a free trial, should you really
care? You get to see how the paid for version works, and not spend any
money. Rather like the food tasting stations at the store. LOL

Today when I tried to do a scan on the 780
with malwarebytes it opened with this:

I didn't select to try premium and there
seems no way of getting out of this and
running the free version only.

The 8500 is not affected and runs the free
version as normal.

I hadn't thought about that, so I just
re-installed malwarebytes ver 4.0.4 and
now both computers have the same problem.

I'm afraid if I click scan it will launch
the 14 day premium trial which I don't want.

It seems like they are trying to force the
14 day trail whether you want it or not.

In retrospect, it's probably better I go with
malwarebytes premium since Win 7 support will
be ending soon.

Just because MS is ending their support, doesn't mean Malwarebytes will
stop support. Shoot, on the rare times I boot XP, I sometimes get an
update from MS for the Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Check the webpage, see what they say about W7 support. And you can
simply wait and see what happens. :-)
