Default Firewall : IP protocol specific settings ?

Using XP SP3. My question relates to the "Windows Firewall".

If I am to use the firewall (which I would love to do...) I need
an "exception" to be set to allow IP protocol number 41 thru
(tunneling). This is IP /protocol/ 41, not TCP /port 41/.

However there seems to be no protocol related settings available
using the typically MS dumbed-down GUI. "Netsh" commands do not
seem to provide a solution either.

Is it possible using Regedit ? Searching the www did not help
locate appropriate registry settings :=(

TIA

What kind of tunneling are you referring to?

The tunneling interfaces Windows networking creates for
different types of traffic, including but not limited to 6-in-4;
this is irrelevant.

I've double checked Microsoft technet : not only the Windows XP
(toy) firewall does not allow conrol of IP protocols other than
TCP,UDP and (partly) ICMP, it also provides no way to control on
the tunneling interfaces or any interface indeed which is not
shown in the network connections control pannel applet.

So I got my answer : I must dump the FW - could as well dump
Windows altogether; MS was never good on networking anyways.

Did they address this problem in newer Win versions ? I'm told
the TCP/IP stack in Vista and ff. was redone from scratch -
which doesn't tell whether their firewalls are better and finer
grained. Anyone ?

Mr. NimbUs

For Microsoft Firewall will setup;
any Software or post you need to exit with.

But if you on a Router or Workgroup Switch,
you have to setup it Firewall, For the PC_IP:Post
to bypass the Router firewalls..

Your Router Setup page is at::
http://192.168.0.1

Name: admin

or

Name: admin
Password: password

Do to forwarding,
and set up your tunneling there..

For a start, Mr Hottext should try to grasp the difference
between (IP) protocol numbers, vs. (TCP,UDP) port numbers.

Thanks for trying to help nevertheless..;

Mr. NimbUs

Know one here can help you,
if you do not understand a TCP,UDP and know how it works..
Microsoft Firewall setup go thou "Both" TCP,UDP always,
not so with a Router....

But you have to set your Router Firewall to TCP,UDP or Both.....

Mr. Hot-Text:

Mr. Nimbus knows that not all routers' set-up pages are at 192.168.0.1
(for example, I've seen one at 10.0.0.2).

Windows Firewall with Advanced Security - Inbound Rules - New Rule

Custom Rule - Protocol Type - Custom - Protocol Number - 41..

Next Next OK

Of course you'll need to upgrade from XP to do it... not sure about
Vista, but that's where you'll find it in Win 7

No is send hem to AH-M

It was not just a Windows question,
and the answer was that Windows Firewall or registry settings,
is not the problem..
But the Router firewalls is the one causing the big problem...
