Default 2 XP operating systems

After struggling with a virus, my son ran the recovery
disk on a new Gateway desktop computer. He now has two XP
systems running, which is really slowing down his system.
He's going to bring the computer home from college next
week, so how can I delete the extra XP operating system?
One of the tech support people at the college told him to
re-format the hard drive. This is rather scary; it it
absolutely necessary? If so, how do I go about doing it?
Thank you for your help!
