160 gig HD

CompUsa is selling a 160 gig HD for $70.00.

Is that a good deal?

check the specs.
does not appear to be a FAST hard drive.

being that it is the GENERIC one advertised here.

IDE not EIDE, 40 pin cable not 80 pin cable, etc...

Sounds good! I got my W.D. 160 just before Christmas for $29.95 from best
buy (after an in store rebate and a mail in rebate). Such a good deal I
bought 3 of them.

It is a good deal.

They call it generic but the parameters listed are typical for the present
160GB drives.

Note: Some of the earlier drives had rotational speed of 5200 RPM and 2 M
cache. This drive is in line with the present retail 160GB drives based on
the limited information provided.

My first guess is that it is a Maxtor drive

Provided your BIOS has support for '48 bit LBA' - one from the past
couple of years probably does. older ones may need an update or even on
really old motherboards a separate controller card. And XP must be at
least at SP1. Then partition and format from the disk management of XP,
not externally. Otherwise only the first 137 GB (128 binary measure)
will be accessible at all.

them out?

for a suggested retail price.

They also distribute the drive with another name or as generic thru certain
outlets at a lower price.

I do not know this is the case here.
