I suggest you pick one out of the 3 you are using and uninstall the others. ~Matthew Stoddart A+ 10yrs pc support~ |

Viruses?
First, You must know the difference between antivirus, firewall, and
antispyware... Antivirus: A thing that searches for viruses, finds them and attempts to do something. Firewall: A friendly person who stands next to the door of your computer and lets everybody in. Especially windows firewall... Antispywa A thing that looks for things that generate popups, and steal information about your PC. Now, Having 3 antivirusses is a bad idea in the first place. I think Norton is all you need... But you decide on that... If you are infected with ":--- Trojan Horse Dialer DBZ exe Trojan Horse Generic...blablabla" and none of your antivirusses can find it, it means you have a similar problem to the one i had yesterday... I downloaded a program that installed four other bad programs without me knowing it, and ALL of the programs (except the one i wanted) Were some crappy spyware that kept telling me to get an antispyware program... So it looks like the antispyware " Spyware Quake " Is the one who makes spyware in the first place.. SO the awnser in short: You do not have what the popup tells you you have, in otherwords, you are NOT infected with trojan horse dialers if your antivirus cant find them, but you have Spyware/Adware/Malware that tells you that you do so they get payed for making you buy somebodys product... All you really need to do is get StopZilla (and your antivirusses will tell you that stopzilla is spyware, because they dont want you to uninstall them... :-)...) I am sure you can afford STOPzilla! if you could afford 2 antivirusses... and if you didnt buy them, you can get stopzilla the same way... www.stopzilla.com Worked for me... (Also, NEVER USE AVG FREE!!! or if you bought it, well, that one sucks too) And now I must stop typing or I will have to get my hand amputated... Bye! |

Hi Ted
I think you are in the wrong newsgroup - well you have posted here from the web interface - if you have a virus problem, which appears to be a bit complicated, and you would like clear advice, then I would suggest here for your web discussion group. http://www.microsoft.com/communities...xp=&sloc=en-us Or set-up in newsgroups where there is a dedicated group for viruses. Viruses?
First off, uninstall McAfee and Norton completely.. having done that, hang
the respective CDs out side to scare off birds.. Now uninstall R-Firewall.. do the same with that CD too.. There is now a decent firewall and AV solution that will not conflict with anything.. You have a problem with spyware.. so use spyware removers.. read on.. OK.. all of your Anti-virus solutions have been compromised to some degree because you had too many running. so the first step is to run a one shot virus remover.. I have found that Trend Housecall works for people.. download and run it.. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ ... select the 'online scan' and follow the directions given. This takes a while to complete but is a necessary first step. You will also need to download Spyware removal software.. Spybot and Adaware are available at these websites.. both are free.. download and run them.. don't forget to check for updates after you have started them.. Adaware SE - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ ... and how to use it.. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...utorial48.html SpyBot S&D - http://www.safer-networking.org/ ... and how to use it.. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...utorial43.html Spybot has the ability to immunize a system, but there is better for this function, so download and run Spyware Blaster too.. again, check for updates.. SpywareBlaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html ... and how to use it.. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...utorial49.html Ewido Suite - http://www.ewido.net/en/ .. NOTE.. FOR Windows XP ONLY.. A trial version is available, and they also allow for an online scan CWShredder will eliminate CoolWebSearch and variants.. there is a free download here.. CWShredder.. http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract..._download.html To use CWShredder, simply start the program, use 'check for update' to make sure you have the latest version, then hit 'fix.' It will check your system against a list of current CWS variants, and fix any infections it finds. Your system should be looking good now re. any spyware issue. As long as you practice 'safe hex', you could get by with Zonealarm, AVG free, and SpywareBlaster (updated). I do, as do all connected to my home network. -- Mike Hall MS-MVP Windows Shell/User "Ted" wrote in message ... Go through these virus/malware removal steps systematically: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware Include scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV and also Ewido. Make sure you do all the prep and finishing work and follow the instructions to do all scans in Safe Mode. You do not need to purchase any of the removal tools; they are all free. If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA). ONLY USE ONE VIRUS SCANNER - It's like driving a GM car and using VW parts -
there is far too much conflict and it jsut doesn't work!!! - A Good Norton or Macaffee Virus program will check all your worms, spam, adware. Don't waste your $$ on all the other programs ! Viruses?
Ted wrote:
I am using 3 virus checker;1=AVG Free 2=McAffe 3= Nortons. Two points here. 1. You should never have more than one anti-virus program running at the same time. It's OK to have multipleanti-virus programs installed, if no more than one is resident and the others are just used for occasional scans, but that probably isn't the case here. If these are all running, you will severely hurt your computer's performance, and--even more important--you may have all sorts of problems casued by conflicts among them. The problems you are experiencing are very likely because of this. 2. Not only are you hurting yourself by running three, but among those three are the two anti-virus programs that are probably the worst and most troublesome on the market--Norton and McAfee. If I were you, I would get rid of both and stick with AVG. More is not necessarily better. 2 Firewalls 1= Zone Alarm 2=R-Firewall The same is true of firewall programs. Do not run more than one. You achieve no extra protection, you incur the extra overhead of running two firewalls, and you run the risk of conflicts between them. See http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu.../firewall.mspx which includes the following: "Q. Should I use both the built-in firewall and a software firewall from a different company on my Windows XP computer? "A. No. Running multiple software firewalls is unnecessary for typical home computers, home networking, and small-business networking scenarios. Using two firewalls on the same connection could cause issues with connectivity to the Internet or other unexpected behavior. One firewall, whether it is the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall or a different software firewall, can provide substantial protection for your computer." Also note that if you update your third-party firewall to a new version, the update routine will probably turn it off first. If the Windows firewall isn't running, you will temporarily be left with no running firewall, which is very dangerous. So turn on the Windows firewall temporarily before doing maintenance on your third-party firewall. The Windows firewall monitors incoming traffic only. Almost any third-party firewall will also monitor outbound traffic, stopping rogue programs trying to call home, and is a better choice. When I scan for viruses they all come back as clean (no virus) then I get a message telling me that I have an infected computer, with the following virus :--- Trojan Horse Dialer DBZ exe Trojan Horse Generic WUE SRVJJE exe Trojan Horse Generis WUE SRVYT exe I have treid to locate these as it tells me that they are in documents & settings\local settings\Temperory Internet Files\contents IE5\3JHJY8TZ (bgates(1)exe IE5\U4H3JTOJ IE5\W43S5AQ2 From what program do you get this message? Also note that over and above your anti-virus and firewall perotection, you need anti-spyware protection, which you've said nothing about. Here, however, you *do* need multiple products to protect you, since no single one catches everything. I recommend that you start out with a combination of Spybot Search and Destroy Adaware Spyware Blaster. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup |
