How do you change file type?

Could anyone help me, please!!!
My problem is that I save some of my conversation from msn messenger to My
Received Files in My Documents Folder, but it seens unreadable for it show up
as a XML file type so there is alot of, fromtotimedate, or some
thing similar; So what I would like to know is how to change it to plain
readable text without having to seach for the saved conversation in between
every -,.( )_- ( if you get what I mean,lol).
Could someone please tell me what file type is need and how to change to it,
if that is my problem?

What is the file extension now? [If your computer is set at
the default, it hides the extension for known file types].
Set that file type to open with Internet Explorer, it will
read the tags [XML,HTML] and just show the text.


You're probably using Notepad or WordPad to read the file.

thank you very much for your reply, but to tell you the truth, I still
haven't got a clue to what you mean, e.g file extension? default? and setting
file type? (LOL) I still see me as a beginnerto all this computering.

The file name consists of two parts:
1. A label which consists of a variable number of characters. This part is
usually consider to be the file name.
2. A file extension which also consists of a variable number of characters
but which designates the kind of file. You should not attempt to change the
file type by merely renaming this part.

The usual setupof XP (the "default" setup that is) hides file extensions
from view. However, you can change this setup to show the file extensions
because that will help us determine which program should be used to view the
file. To view the file extension, in Windows Explorer, click the Tools tab,
then click the Folder Options tab, next click the View tab. In the view
tab, uncheck the box labeled "Hide extensions of known file types".
Still in the view tab, click Apply and OK. Click OK in the remaing tabs
until you get back to Windows explorer.

Now, see what type of file you are trying to view.

If, for example, the type is html, then that is a file written in the
Hypertext Markup Language. I usually edit such files in Notepad. The text
you are looking for is buried somewhere is such a file underneath various
html instructions. Such instructions are contained between the character
and the character. These instructions can be ignored because they are
merely telling an interpreter how to prepare a page for viewing. But, the
text is in such a file somewhere.
