Default Tiscali ADSL Modem Convert to Netgear DG384G Wireless/Router?

Hi all,
Can anybody tell me if it is possible to get a connection using a Netgear
DG384G wireless router on a Tiscali ADSL line which is using a USB modem?

I tried to install the DG384G router but could not get it to connect with
the Tiscali servers. The Tiscali tech guys told me that they are only
concerned with modems as they dont do Wireless/Routers.

So any thoughts or fixes for this query will begratefully accepted?

Regards
Gerryw

Not really a security problem, but:

Doesn't the Netgear router expect to connect to its modem via ethernet?
Most routers work like that.
If so, then what you need is a modem which convets the aDsl signal to
ethernet and provides a jack for the ethernet cable.
I don't know of a router which accepts a USB modem (or even has a USB port);
I most assuredly did not say that there
aren't any.

I suppose you could setup your computer to provide internet sharing and also
to get the computer to connect to the router
via an ethernet cable. But that certainly would be doing things the hard
way.

You need a modem that has an Ethernet port to use the Router.

Default Tiscali ADSL Modem Convert to Netgear DG384G Wireless/Router?

Hi, (UK)
Perhaps I did not make the setup very clear so I will try to clarify what I
am trying to do.
The 'Tiscali' setup is via a ADSL line (and DSL Filter) through a modem
which is connected to my computer using a USB cable.

I have now got a laptop and another desktop computer in another room which
is why I want to setup a wireless network. I purchased this ADSL 'Netgear'
DG384G Broadband Wireless Router Modem and tried to connect it to the
'Tiscali' ADSL line after taking the USB modem offline.

I connected the DG384G using a standard Telephone cable (through a ADSL
filter) and also an ethernet cable from my computer to the DG384G and run the
configuration setup on the DG383G by inputting the IP Address (192.168.0.1)
using I.E.

All the relevant lights on the DG384G are lit (Power, Internet, Transmission
and LAN port) but the Internet light is blinking an orange light instead of
green like the others which I mean it is trying to get a connection to the
Internet.

I setup all the usual configuration items such as, IP addresses, Subnet
Mask, Gateway, DNS etc for the ADSL Port, the LAN, the Modem and the Wireless
Port and the only thing that did not show up as connected was the ADSL Port
IP address, the Subnet Mask IP address, the Gateway IP address and the Domain
Server IP address. Even though I set them statically in the ADSL
configuration setup they were not present when I opened the 'Router Status'
window.

Could this be the problem and if you think that it could be, is there anyway
to fix it, or do you think that something else is causing the connection
error?

Regards
Gerryw

The problem does seem to me to be that you have not setup the connection
between the Netgear device and your ISP.
I don't see anywhere in this message where you defined the type of
connection between your Netgear and the ISP nor did you mention such items
as username and password (those for your ISP account).

How you do this depends on which country you live in. The fine manual for
the Netgear should have instructions.
I know that the fine manual for my Linksys router does.

Default Tiscali ADSL Modem Convert to Netgear DG384G Wireless/Router?

Hi (UK)
I connected the ISP telephone line (through the DSL Filter) into the line
connection on the NetgearWireless Broadband Modem Router and also setup a
connection between my computer and the latter usin an Ethernet cable (all as
per the Netgear manufacturers) instructions.
I also installed the Username and Password for the ISP LOGIN account.

But as I said, the ISPs IP adderesses do not appear to have been made
available to the Netgear device, although I did get the info needed from the
ISP and input them statically to try to overcome this problem with no joy.

I am at aloss as to what has gone wrong and would appreciate any help in
this direction.
Regards
Gerryw
