Error 86

I have a 1 year old Dell Lap Top running XP. Last night when I started it up
the Display read "Error 86" and asked for a password.

I have all the CD's with this system. Could someone tell me how to fix this
problem.

You "started it up". What does that mean? You powered it up and
instantly got the error message? That it was after the POST/logo screen
appeared? That it occurred while Windows was loading? Did it occur
before your logged in? After you logged in? Did occur after starting
some application? That it occurred after you did something within some
application?

Regarding error or status messages:
- Do NOT omit the message.
- Do NOT describe the message.

Error 86 is a generic Windows error message meaning "The specified
network password is incorrect". This error can be caused by many
different things, but always in a situation where an invalid user
account password is being used - maybe you'd saved your password in some
application program, or the like?

But as the other guys have already suggested, it's pretty hard to give
any advice without knowing a lot more about the circumstances in which
you see this error. You'll probably need to describe it in (a lot) more
detail.
