Default Service Pack 3 with XP

I have a HP machine that came pre loaded with XP. when I downloaded
service pack 3 and installed it, the machine would not re boot after I
restarted it. It looks like it is just about there and then goes to a
B&W screen saying I can boot in one of 3 safe mode options or normal mode.
If i choose normal mode , it tries to re boot but comes back to that b& W
screen . IS it missing some sort of driver??
