Default MSN Messenger 5.0.0544

Hi Jon,

There really isn't much they can do -- Microsoft can't control what D-Link, Linksys, etc. do
with their firmware releases -- it's up to them to get sorted.

So.......reading between the lines, it would seem as if MS still have a lot
of work to do. I am very surprised, considering how well MS products work
on the whole, that this situation still exists. MS have put a great deal of
work into the home/soho functionality, why is this still a problem Jonathan?
Have MS got any plans to rectify the problems?

Cheers,

Jon

Hi Jon,

Windows Messenger does not have Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) enabled

file transfer -- in
order for file transfers to go through Windows Messenger, there would have

to be built-in
support for Messenger file transfer in the router. Since there appears to

be, this does
often conflict with MSN Messenger 5's UPnP file transfer, which is why

it's not working. I
don't think there's much you can do about this.

Bad news, and pretty well what I was expecting Jonathan. MSN Messenger

5
installed without a hitch on two machines. I did as you said, unchecked

the
box to prevent 4.7 from starting with Windows. Also I ran the reg entry

for
Outlook. All was looking good at this point. Reboot both machines, all
looking good still.

The system is configured like this: Both machines running XP Pro SP1 &

all
subsequent updates from MS, both connected to the net via a D-Link 714P+
(UPnP compliant router) and D-Link 300 ADSL modem. Both machines are
working perfectly in all respects other than MSN Messenger.

Text chat. video and voice is working fine, both between the two

machines
and also with other remote users. The problem I always see is that a

file
transfer fails because Messenger tells me "the connection is blocked"
Windows Messenger 4.7 does not exhibit this fault and works every single
time.

Hi Jon,

To retain full compatibility and just use MSN Messenger 5, disable

Windows
Messenger 4.7, by
opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking

'Run
this program when
Windows starts'. Then run this .reg file to stop Windows Messenger

from
loading with Outlook
Express:

That's all there is to it.

ok, sounds good. but I imagine that I will end up with two

Messenger
icons
on the taskbar if I install it. How can I retain all of the
functionality
of Windows Messenger 4.7 whilst not having it on the taskbar. I

think I
may
have seen you post this info before. Please can you explain it

again.
I
would appreciate that.

I'm running XP Pro

Greetings Jon,

Windows Messenger does not need to be installed to do voice/video

or
file
transfer -- it's
only required to be installed for Remote Assistance, Whiteboard,

and
Application Sharing.
MSN Messenger 5 has always been "UPnP aware", and in fact is more
"UPnP"
aware then Windows
Messenger is.

What is the story with this new version Jonathan? Is it still
necessary
to
have Windows Messenger installed to be able to do voice, video,

file
trans,
and so on. Is the new version UPnP aware. The Messenger

flavour
and
version puzzle has me perplexed.
