Thanks, Andy Instrumentation readout, in the form of BootVis, is available. Microsoft stopped supporting it. I was able to test it on my WinXP SP3 machine, and it seemed to work fine here. It creates a trace of OS activity during boot. This is my collection of random links. ******* http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/bootvis/ http://articles.techrepublic.com.com...1-5034622.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BootVis (Where to get a copy of Bootvis) http://majorgeeks.com/BootVis_d664.html (Sample user experience with disk operating modes or driver choices. Do you use a disk image or is there something easier ? Andy "The squeaky wheel gets the grease, but sometimes the wheel gets a blowtorch." A.K. |

My C: is only 20GB, and I use Macrium Reflect Free to back it up. When I make suggestions like this, it's to encourage people to make backups. And, also, to estimate their own risk or comfort factor with software. There are plenty of lesser solutions, but then, they require research. Like, say you break your registry. System Restore keeps copies for you, if you have System Restore turned on. But you don't have to "learn anything", if you have a working backup system. I keep the content of C: relatively small, to make the backup run faster. Paul |

I only mention that, so Andy will tear his hair out, trying to shave off the 2 seconds :-) Actually, if you're into beating the record, whatever it is, start with a motherboard with an Insyde BIOS. Those POST really fast, and will help your stats. My Asus motherboard (in this machine), wastes a lot of time in POST. Paul |

Andy I think my desktop takes about a minute. But then again, I've got a TON of software on here, going back when, and some of it was even imported from previous versions of windows. Actually, I just checked, and my C: partition has about 30 GB of data on it, and that *excludes* music, photos, and videos, most of which are on separate partitions. (well, not the photos, but I don't have much big stuff in there). So that's a fair amount of software I guess. I'm guessing a few hundred programs, en total. And I think somewhere around 100,000 files or so, last time I checked. And it's a 2.4 GHz CPU, to boot! |

Restoring the MBR did not help. Another one of those mysteries. :-) Andy |
