OK, so somehow you've tried to set up the same account,
many many times.

If you go to the "Server Settings" entry in the Account window,
the lower right has two path specifications. One points to the
current .rc file. The other points to the current folder with
the two files per group in it.

You will have to verify the currently used .rc file, has
"good looking" entries in it.

*******

This means:

1-112391,112393,112394,112397,112399,112401,112403,1 12405-112407,112409

Low water = 1
High water = 112409 (like mine)

The rest of the numbers are unread messages. As you read those, they
should get removed from the list.

Chances are, the actual .rc (of the twelve files you've got), isn't
exactly like your sample line. So first you have to figure out
what file it is using.

From the illustration in http://i44.tinypic.com/15zha4o.gif my newsrc
file: points to news.eternal-septembe-11.rc. My Local Directory: is greyed
out and I can't see where it points to.

Should I delete (in text editor) all of the 112xxx files and just have 1-112409?

Thanks for hanging in with me.

If you change it to 1-112409, as far as I know, that will mark the unread
articles, to be read.

You could also try 1-1, and see what happens. I'm looking for visual symptoms
of what the problem might be. Maybe it's not the list of articles
that is a problem, but some kind of corruption in the other two files.

In any case, save your existing files, so you can put things back if
you don't like the results.

And the fact that your "local directory" is greyed out, I've got no guess
as to what's wrong there.

If the other newsgroups appear "conventional", then the other
group files must be OK, and the tool must be locating them OK.

Ideally what you want, is for those two paths to be
reasonably named and pointing at a consistent set of data. I'm
just puzzled as to how you got 12 .rc files. I have two .rc files,
and my configuration has been stable for a long time. I may have
filled out my details a second time at some point, when there was
some sort of server problem.

Should I delete all the news.eternal-septembe-x.rc files except the last one,
news.eternal-septembe-11.rc which seems to be the one being used?

Never be in a hurry to delete things.

If you want to do something about them, move them to a safe place for now.

The same goes for the two files related to microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.
If you want to experiment, shut down the newsclient program, move the
files, run the newsclient program again, and new files should be created.
As far as I know, the .rc file tracks which groups are subscribed, and
any group found in the .rc, should have a pair of files generated
for it later. If you unsubscribe from a group, move the two files
associated with it out of the way, there's no reason then for the
news client to make new files by that name, on the next run.

At this point, we don't really know what's broken. It could be
that the .mdat has a problem, and that's why the list of messages
is disappearing.

At least now, you have some idea what files are involved, and
what points to them.

Paul
