This illustration is hopefully self-explanatory:

I can't get my mind around this inconsistency and it's making me
uncertain what files I'm working with!

(I've posted in a couple of PSP groups too.)

I'll hazard a guess that the file in question has PNG transparency
settings that Explorer recognises and many imaging apps do not.

Be easier to comment after looking at the actual small file.

Maybe it has to do with how you configured Windows to show (or not show)
background colors for icons. Remember that what you see on the desktop
is being presented by Windows Explorer. The explorer.exe process is the
desktop manager and why killing all instances of it results in losing
the desktop.

The option is badly worded. It appears it merely has Windows Explorer
ignore whatever background color is specified in the icon image file and
instead use the background color configured for Windows Explorer.

See if toggling this lets you see the background rather than having
Windows Explorer ignore it.

Thanks Martin, I think you're right. I was just about to post this
follow-up:

I think I'm onto something. It must somehow be due to the original
file being an animated GIF, like this one:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...nimatedGIF.gif

I wanted a single image and think I obtained it either via Animation
Shop or PSP8.

Perhaps that somehow breaks PSP8's display procedure (No checkerboard;
and on a Background, which is not supposed to contain any
transparency.)

And here's the example PNG you requested:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...nalExample.png

--------------------

Thanks VanguardH, but as you see I don't believe the issue of
Explorer's thumbnail background colour is involved here.

Irfanview, Gimp, and Photoshop CS2 all show it with a transparent
background.

Drop shadows are not the same as transparent color for
icons. The transoarent color should always be not showing
if the icon is made correctly. And PNG is not the same as
ICO. I'm guessing it's just that PSP8 is too old. Full support
for PNG is relatively recent.

PSP9 doesn't deal correctly with this example's transparency, either.

Thanks Nil. Of those three I have only the excellent IrfanView.

I was getting the same display as in PSP8 but prompted by your post I
now see that this setting was not enabled:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ncySetting.jpg

Having done so, I see the transparency.

Do you have that permanently set? Do you use the default grey
background colour?

--------------------

I'm now sure that explanation I ventured up-thread is correct.I've
only recently returned to this task after a longish gap so I'm a bit
vague, sorry. But I reckon I must have made that original PNG from the
animated GIF by opening it in PSP8 and saving it. I tried that again
yesterday and see the message:
"This is an animated GIF file. Only the first page will be opened and
saving over this file will result in loss of information."

I went ahead anyway, as I assumed I could then remove the black!
