Default System cleanup' option missing on some Win7 PCs?

Win7 is supposed to have a space-saving 'Clean up system files' option - I'm
running Win7 64bit - where do you check to see if this option is available?

Thanks

Click on the Windows orb (lower left on the Task Bar) and enter Disk
Cleanup.
Click on Disk Cleanup to start the process

or

Start Menu/Accesories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup

The program will first perform a calculation for the basic cleaning,
then provide a summary in a dialog box (to check/uncheck items) and an
additional option to 'Clean up System Files'. Selecting the 'System
Files' option will rerun the calculation and include System Files.

Thanks, winston, I will give it a look.

Do you have a "cleanmgr.exe" ?

You have to run it twice.

The first time, it shows the easy stuff.

There is a button near the lower left, regarding Clean Up
System Files. Clicking that causes the program to re-launch
(often launching behind some other window where you
cannot immediately see it).

And note that depending on the OS, some of the "cleanup"
this tool offers to do, is actually just Windows NTFS
Compression. If you find a cleanup run is taking three
hours, that's what it is doing, compressing stuff. And
while the "compact" program provided by the OS, is
capable of removing NTFS compression, it does not
retain the proper file permissions (which earns a
"what was Microsoft thinking" rating from me!).

So best practice would be, if you've never used Disk Cleanup
before, or you're using Disk Cleanup right after some
optional Windows Update has come in to change the cleanmgr.exe
code, do a backup before the Cleanmgr has a chance to run.
If you cannot afford the time to let Cleanmgr finish, you can
always hammer the machine and restore from backup. If you
love a mess, then don't bother with a backup and "let'er rip".
For example, if you have an SSD for C:, you probably don't
particularly care what half-assed solutions they're providing.
Only someone with a slow old hard drive might care about
this stuff (compression seems to slow down directory
traversal).

I found it and ran it, selected the Items I felt comfortable with and ran it.
Had a major concern during the operation as it took one heck of a long time when
the system restarted and it was going thru it cleanup process to remove files,
etc - well over 25 minutes! So, I was really concerns that something may have
broken on my system during the process. A couple of cleanup pages set there
forever - had me really worried. But, it finished and the system appears to be
working fine! I was just not aware the process would take so long.

But, let's see how it goes.

Thanks
