Please help There is a list of error codes here. https://web.archive.org/web/20100126...ity-win32.aspx 0x80070426 The service has not been started. ERROR_SERVICE_NOT_ACTIVE Look in Services control panel for "USBStor" service. And start the service. net start usbstor If the machine is part of a domain, they can push out a policy to stop the usbstor service from running. http://blogs.technet.com/b/danstolts...eferences.aspx HTH, Paul |

Not recognizing whatever USB flash drives your granddaughter owns does not say that no USB flash drives are recognized. Has she tried USB flash drives that have proven to work in other computers? Is it only USB flash drives that are not recognized or do her other USB devices also not function (printer, mouse, keyboard, wifi, etc)? "machine" gives no details on who made it and how it was setup. Is it a pre-built computer that came with the OS pre-installed? If so, what is the make and model of computer? Is it a self-built computer? If so, what is the make and model of the motherboard? Who installed the OS? Did they install the mobo's chipset drivers? Did you check if the USB ports are enabled in the BIOS? Paul mentioned a USBstor service. I don't see one in Win7 when using the GUI interface to services (services.msc). I can see it using the Service Controller utility via "sc.exe qc usbstor" in a command shell. Pushing policies in a domain is not the only means of disabling USB support (for mass storage media). Malware can do that, too. Has she updated her anti-virus/malware software and scanned her computer? Which AV software does she use? Efficacy varies amongst AV software. For example, malware, an admin, or a user (directly or via tweaker or via instruction) could change the following registry entry (provided they were logged in under an admin-level account that grants them permission to edit the registry): Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\USBSTOR\ Data: start (DWORD) Value: 4 = disable USB storage devices 3 = enable USB storage devices Paul mentioned a policy to disable USB storage devices. All policies are registry entries. Any process granted permission to write to the registry can alter the above data item's value. If your granddaughter is not on a domain and she did not change this value then she should be looking for malware. I'm assuming the computer is her property and not the property of her parents or employer who might have decided to lock down the computer to prevent infection via USB storage devices. With no indication of the age of the granddaughter or existing parents, maybe she lives with her parents so contact them to determine if it is their computer or hers. Could be she is trying to use you to circumvent controls employed her parents on the parent's computer. If the computer is not hers (e.g., her employer's, the library's, someone else's) then she will need to ask the owner to let her use USB storage devices on their computer. |

Please help Try opening the "services" console (Start -- Run -- type "services.msc") You need to be logged into a user account with administrator privileges. Make sure these are set to "automatic" 1. Background Intelligent Transfer Service: ON 2. Cryptographic Services: ON 3. Windows Update Services: ON Restart the computer after exiting the console. Try connecting the USB drive after reboot. __________________________________________ If that does not work I suspect the USB "mass storage devices" drivers not in use are messing with the one you need to work. There is a long, time consuming, and human error prone way of removing the old drivers; however I found a utility that automates it, supposedly. (I have NOT tried this utility myself). Unplug the USB stick BEFORE doing this, read the directions first please: http://www.techspot.com/community/to...rivers.145884/ I ran the 64 bit version of DriveCleanup.exe thru Virustotal.com and its clean. The 32 bit version was scanned 3 weeks ago and is clean as well. 32 bit result: https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/9...2a11/analysis/ 64 bit result: https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/e...f144/analysis/ the remedies using services were not enough ! The drivecleaning did it and remove 22 USb devices,16 disk devices and so one. Thanks a lot Morgan. Paul thanks for the list of error codes |

I have not given the full story. In fact my grand daughter brougt me the machine and I made the elementary checks. thanks |
