Shortcuts To App Do Not Show App's Icon ?
Mozilla Firefox.
- Drag-dropping a shortcut from Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox to the desktop, no problem: the shortcut winds up with the FF icon - But all the shortcuts I have that invoke FF with a command line argument (e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" "http://ExtremeSurfCam.DynDNS.org:1470") have reverted so some sort of generic, non-FF icon. They work - FF comes up with the proper web page, just no FF icon. Seems like something's broken... But what ? -- Pete Cresswell |

That often resets (corrupts?) the registry for the Internet shortcut icon. -- David E. Ross Is Kim Davis a hero or a villain? See my http://www.rossde.com/KimDavis.html. |

Shortcuts To App Do Not Show App's Icon ?
Per Mike Barnes:
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/rebuil...-cache-windows Did it....rebooted.... no change. Note that FireFox is the only icon that seems to be affected AND that Drag/Dropping a shortcut from FF's ProgramFiles directory to the desktop results in a short that does show the FF icon.... AND that (RightClick a shortcut with the missing icon) | Properties | Change Icon | (click on a FireFox icon) restores the shortcut to the expected state of showing the proper icon. In light of the last observation/workaround, I guess my problem just went away But enquiring minds still wonder..... Anybody got another suggestion ? -- Pete Cresswell |

Per (PeteCresswell):

In light of the last observation/workaround, I guess my problem just went away But enquiring minds still wonder..... I am starting to think it is something within FireFox.exe. Change Icon pops a list that includes two FireFox icons - both pointing to FireFix.exe. Select the first one in the list, and no change - still have the generic icon on the shortcut. Select the second one on the list and the shortcut now has the proper FireFox icon. Either that or something about the way the list is built.... -- Pete Cresswell |

Just wondering if you're referring to the icon for Firefox itself or for webpages in Firefox for which you want to have desktop shortcuts. For me, it seems there's no way to get the icon used by a webpage in Firefox to appear for the shortcut. All I ever get is the generic shortcut blank page icon. I can change the icon to something else from the choices offered at "change icon," but the choice doesn't include the "real" icon for the page. If I open the same webpage in IE and create a shortcut to it, I get the actual icon for the page. Since I don't want to use IE, however, I've changed the generic icons to something I'll at least recognize. It's frustrating, though. -- Jo-Anne |

When I had this problem, I used Nirsoft's FileTypesMan.exe from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/file_types_manager.html to delete the ..URL file extension completely from my PC. I then continued to use FileTypesMan.exe to create the .URL file extension anew, including specifying the icon the shortcuts should have. Before deleting the .URL file extension, I made notes on what its FileTypesMan.exe settings were. I used this when creating .URL anew. Before creating the new .URL, however, I searched my registry to make sure no lingering .URL keys, data, or values remained, deleting any I found. For safety, you should backup your entire system before trying any of this. -- David E. Ross Is Kim Davis a hero or a villain? See my http://www.rossde.com/KimDavis.html. |

Q noted that this is a Firefox bug and provided an easy-to-use work-around that involves downloading the website's favicon, then at Change Icon navigating to the downloaded icon and choosing it. -- Jo-Anne |

Per Jo-Anne:
Just wondering if you're referring to the icon for Firefox itself or for webpages in Firefox for which you want to have desktop shortcuts. For me, it seems there's no way to get the icon used by a webpage in Firefox to appear for the shortcut. All I ever get is the generic shortcut blank page icon. I can change the icon to something else from the choices offered at "change icon," but the choice doesn't include the "real" icon for the page. I *thought* it was working for me in the past.... maybe I was just wishing.... What I did to get the desired FireFox icon was: - Right-click on the problem shortcut - Select "Properties" - Select the "Shortcut" tab if it is not already selected - Click "Change Icon" - Select the last FireFox icon (not the first) - Click "Ok", and click "Ok" again in the props dialog. -- Pete Cresswell |
