Default Shortcuts To App Do Not Show App's Icon ?

Mozilla Firefox.

- Drag-dropping a shortcut from Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
to the desktop, no problem: the shortcut winds up with the FF icon

- But all the shortcuts I have that invoke FF with a command line
argument (e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
"http://ExtremeSurfCam.DynDNS.org:1470") have reverted
so some sort of generic, non-FF icon.

They work - FF comes up with the proper web page, just no FF icon.

Seems like something's broken...

But what ?

Did you recently install Microsoft updates for Internet Explorer? That
often resets (corrupts?) the registry for the Internet shortcut icon.

Default Shortcuts To App Do Not Show App's Icon ?

Per Mike Barnes:

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/rebuil...-cache-windows

Did it....rebooted.... no change.

Note that FireFox is the only icon that seems to be affected AND that
Drag/Dropping a shortcut from FF's ProgramFiles directory to the desktop
results in a short that does show the FF icon.... AND that (RightClick
a shortcut with the missing icon) | Properties | Change Icon | (click
on a FireFox icon) restores the shortcut to the expected state of
showing the proper icon.

In light of the last observation/workaround, I guess my problem just
went away

But enquiring minds still wonder.....

Anybody got another suggestion ?

I am starting to think it is something within FireFox.exe.

Change Icon pops a list that includes two FireFox icons - both pointing
to FireFix.exe.

Select the first one in the list, and no change - still have the generic
icon on the shortcut. Select the second one on the list and the
shortcut now has the proper FireFox icon.

Either that or something about the way the list is built....

Just wondering if you're referring to the icon for Firefox itself or for
webpages in Firefox for which you want to have desktop shortcuts. For
me, it seems there's no way to get the icon used by a webpage in Firefox
to appear for the shortcut. All I ever get is the generic shortcut blank
page icon. I can change the icon to something else from the choices
offered at "change icon," but the choice doesn't include the "real" icon
for the page.

If I open the same webpage in IE and create a shortcut to it, I get the
actual icon for the page. Since I don't want to use IE, however, I've
changed the generic icons to something I'll at least recognize. It's
frustrating, though.

When I had this problem, I used Nirsoft's FileTypesMan.exe from
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/file_types_manager.html to delete the
..URL file extension completely from my PC. I then continued to use
FileTypesMan.exe to create the .URL file extension anew, including
specifying the icon the shortcuts should have.

Before deleting the .URL file extension, I made notes on what its
FileTypesMan.exe settings were. I used this when creating .URL anew.
Before creating the new .URL, however, I searched my registry to make
sure no lingering .URL keys, data, or values remained, deleting any I
found.

For safety, you should backup your entire system before trying any of
this.

Thank you, David. After posting here, it occurred to me to start a
thread at the Firefox newsgroup. Q noted that this is a Firefox bug and
provided an easy-to-use work-around that involves downloading the
website's favicon, then at Change Icon navigating to the downloaded icon
and choosing it.

I *thought* it was working for me in the past.... maybe I was just
wishing....

What I did to get the desired FireFox icon was:

- Right-click on the problem shortcut

- Select "Properties"

- Select the "Shortcut" tab if it is not already
selected

- Click "Change Icon"

- Select the last FireFox icon (not the first)

- Click "Ok", and click "Ok" again in the props dialog.

Hmmm. I couldn't even find a Shortcut tab, let alone a Firefox icon in
the list of icons. What I get when I right-click on a generic webpage
icon and choose Properties is "Web Document," which contains "Change
Icon." And of all the many icons to choose from, I couldn't find even
one Firefox icon, let alone two (although there were two Internet
Explorer icons). And none of the icons was the one for the webpage for
which I had a shortcut.

I have a program "icons from file". Many programs have multiple icons
available.

When I select a .URL shortcut and right-click to get properties, I do
not see the Change Icon button that I see for other shortcuts.

For other shortcuts, the Change Icon button launches the Change Icon
window. The Change Icon window displays a set of icons located at
[%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll], which on my PC is
[C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll].

None of those icons in the Change Icon window are my Web browser's icon.
However, the Change Icon window also has a Browse button that allows
the user to navigate to where the Web browser was installed. You can
select the browser's executable, at which point the the Change Icon
window will then display icons inherent in the browser.

But it won't display the icon for any particular website within that
browser. To get a particular website's icon, I had to first download it
from its web page (per Q, www.example.com/favicon.ico), then browse to
where the download was saved, then click on the icon.
