I upgraded Avast to 2016 11.1.2241. After the upgrade Windows Essential Mail
would not open. I did a system restore using the restore point created by
the Avast upgrade and that fixed the problem.

touting the product

It shows he isn't familiar with the product. And who says avast! is to
blame? There are numerous users out there who have avast! installed and
have no problem with WLM.

Quite right. For one thing, having your email not work is hardly
"hosing the system." Second, his description of the problem is so vague
as to be useless. Third, he doesn't ask a question or seem to want to
be helped. Makes me wonder why he posted about it at all. Just to
complain?

I've used Avast for years and have had very few problems with it. This
latest version has a couple of new features that might have affected
thing. It now includes a password manager, which is turned on by
default. I already use Keepass, so I turned it off immediately. I also
found on one of my computers that after the upgrade, all protection
services that I had turned off had been turned back on. That included
the Mail Scan, which is one I deem unnecessary. An in fact, one of my
email accounts in Thunderbird started complaining about invalid
certificates, until I turned Mail Scan off.

I don't doubt that its possible that Avast might interfere with some
things, but I'm pretty confident that adjusting its settings would fix
them.

I would like to know how to stop it putting messages like the one it
has put at the bottom of this message.

It never used to do that in earlier versions, but has started doing it
since my most recent update.

From the avast UI Settings Active Protection Mail Shield Settings
(gear icon) Behavior - General section "Uncheck" Insert note into
clean message (outgoing).

You do not need to scan outgoing or incoming email or news posts.

Don't leave everything to god. there isn't one; Look at Muslims who
are praying 5 times a day and still disaster strikes them most than any
other group on this planet.

It is time to think in terms of Science, Mathematics and Economics and
be pragmatic about life in general.

You and Mr Morgan are welcome. What I posted is a piece of text I saved
from back when Avast! first started doing the dirty deed. ;-)
