Default Dell 8200 HD problems:

I did try checking to make sure it
was seated and tried a second time
but it still doesn't have the USB
icon to safely remove it. That's
what I meant about it not registering.

It is properly seated ? The drive I mean.

Adapter plugged in ?

Signs the drive is spinning up ?

You should double-check the enclosure
on your 8500.

I'll open the Startech case again
and re-check/re-seat it.

Yes, the Adapter is plugged in

No, the drive didn't spin up
which was another thing. I usually
hear it when I turn it on.

Double check enclosure on the
8500? I don't understand?

let me check the Startech case/HD
,.. I couldn't see anything out of
place or broke and re-seated it.

However, I must have done something
when I tried the 160GB HD in it. The
fan isn't moving and I tried two
different adapters.

The fan is probably evidence of the
state of the +12V. Unless the fan has
a switch, then +12V is probably not
available inside the enclosure. I
would look for a fuse on the controller
board inside the enclosure. Since you've
tried two adapters.

The adapter itself should have current
limiting, making a fuse unnecessary. But
have a look around for something like that.

Normally, you would expect a failing adapter
to act up, but not two adapters going out
at the same time. Unless the fan has been
switched off (some enclosures have a switch
for that cooling fan), then I'd say something
is preventing +12V from powering the inside of
the enclosure.

The fan does not have a switch, it's
totally enclosed. There's only the
on/off switch

Look for a fuse on the controller board?

That's why I provided the pictures because
I could see nothing and if there had been
a fuse I may not of known what it was because
some are square?

I think I may have damaged the Statech
case but I hope the HD is intact. I'll
just have to buy another. My fault entirely

You would not believe all the emails
I've received from Newegg and Ontrac
since the 10 day delay of the video
card.

When I called about the delay they said
they couldn't do anything and didn't. I
ended up calling Ontrac and talked to a
supervisor and gave him the tracking number
and he was as amazed as I was that for 7 full
working days it went undelivered.

In the meantime, I had ordered another
Startech case and again the screws were very
tight. They should be finger tight.

I installed the 2TB Seagate and seems to work
fine and had the safely remove icon. So all is
good.

In passing, did you see that China now
has the fastest super computer in the
world using 'Made in China' technology
and components that is 5x faster than
anything in the U.S.

Do you have any thoughts about that?

I responded earlier but for
some reason it didn't take?

I did end up ordering a new Startech
case and installed the 2TB Seagate
and every thing seems ok:

The computers are good at different things.

http://www.wired.com/2016/06/fastest...ay-taihulight/

"Aside from relatively slow memory - a conscious trade off
to save money and power consumption - this rig is ready to go to work"

That means the machine works best, if the code kernels
fit into L1/L2 cache. (And this is no different
than any other Supercomputer - locality of reference
always helps...)

*******

That machine is not likely to make your copy
of Firefox work any faster :-)

And there are machines that you could run Firefox on.
"1x login/development/visualisation node" - that means
there is one seat, to look at your computed
results on this machine. And you don't have to worry
about sweating in that room, as it looks to have lots of air
conditioning.

http://www.cosmos.damtp.cam.ac.uk/

This is some output from the machine. The machine from
a benchmark perspective, would be a lot slower than
the Chinese machine. But you can also run an ordinary
OS on it. I bet you could even view the Yahoo News
page, without it stalling :-)

Did you see that Google did not have any posts
for 2 days? Hence all my posts(above) and tests
because I didn't know what was going on? I still
don't?

Really? FF wouldn't run faster on that? It sounds
like what your saying is that some PC's are as fast
or faster like game computers for instance?

Yeah,, yahoo, MSN,.. etc what a choice! and they
are getting worst just as you said they would.

As I said all is good.

Robert
