I have done a lot of searching but cannot find a definitive answer to
this question (Probably because its not very important).
In the Thunderbird news reader folder pane (any version) the newsgroup
names are sometimes black and sometimes blue? Does anyone know of a
reason for this?
There wast a thread some time ago but can't find it again, As I
mentioned its not important, I'm just curious.

Blue indicates a group contained new messages the last time it was
checked, black indicates no new messages (but if it contains unread old
messages it will be bold).

Blue means there are new messages in the newsgroup but you
have not yet opened the newsgroup to see the new messages.

Thanks for the replies guys, the weird thing is mine don't always behave
the same with the same circumstances, the results seem rather random,
But no big deal. :-)

In my experience, the intended behavior that Ralph Fox described has
never worked consistently or reliably. It's a nice visual cue, but
don't depend on it.

I think you're on the right track, but it may be configurable. On my
notebooks, groups with new messages are also presented in bold black and
are blue when the new messages are mine.

Bold Blue means you've got new mail yet unread.
Bold Black means you've got old mail yet unread.

As to what group gets tagged depends on how your Message Filters are
configured. For example, recently both sound AND color started happening when
new mail arrived for filtered messages for Inbox AND the target folder; -
previously there was no sound for filtered messages and color only on the
target folder.

If you've muted a subthread and it is getting replies, then the ng and/ or
main thread will look like they have unread posts. The only way to clear it
to mark all messages as read.

Seems also that when a filtered message gets delivered it appears in its
destination folder which is highlighted bold blue as expected, but now its
account folder is also highlighted bold blue as well. This never happened
before; - the message was moved and its target folder highlighted but without
sound. Since sound now accompanies filtered messages, the highlighting of the
associated account folder behavior also started.
